Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

Click here to watch the trailer.

No, this has nothing to do with the classic 1990′s TV show… This is more about Guillermo del Toro’s new horror film ‘Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark’.  I saw the trailer and was very intrigued not just by the story, but by the creepy little details in the sneak peek.  Every little sound, whisper, creak, and groan is brought out perfectly to match the dark shadowy visuals, and even the text in the preview is eerily illuminated.  So weather you like the trailer because you love scary movies, or you admire the devil in the details, click the pic to check the method.  (The film’s synopsis is below.)

Guillermo del Toro presents DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a horror film starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison, directed by Troy Nixey. Based on the 1973 telefilm that del Toro believes is the scariest TV production ever made, the story follows Sally (Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own. Akin to del Toro’s PAN’S LABYRINTH, DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK focuses on a young girl’s struggle against menacing and terrifying forces. FilmDistrict will release the film on August 26th.

A 2 Story Trailer Bigger Than Will Smith’s.

I remember reading a story a while back about Will Smith pissing people off with his MASSIVE trailer on the set of Men In Black 3, but Ashton Kutcher has made headlines this weekend after it was revealed that his on-set trailer costs just shy of $9000 a week to maintain.  Kutcher’s luxury trailer on the set of Two And A Half Men measures 16 metres long and weighs in at around 30 tonnes.  The luxury home features “side sections and a second floor that hydraulically emerge from the main body to offer a total floor space of 1,100 square feet.”  It also includes a whopping seven 60-inch 3D plasma screens, two bathrooms, a kitchen with granite countertops and a conference area.  The furniture is apparently designed so that it will fold or collapse to accommodate the top and side extensions.  Security cameras are mounted on the outside of the trailer giving 360-degree surveillance.  And when someone rings the doorbell, the stereo system and TV volume drops, with the image of the visitor being projects on the screens inside.

Marvel vs. DC Comics – The Battle for 2012.

As many people already know, Captain America signaled the end of the initial Marvel Comics movies period before the Avengers.  (The Avengers is one of the single largest ensemble collaborations between multiple films in the history of cinema… just in case you were doubting how epic this movie will be.)  Recently however, some rather awesome artwork has surface that showcases all the individual heroes of the film.  The Avengers assemble in the summer of 2012, and will undoubted be one of the biggest movies of the year. But just in case you really are unfamiliar with what happens at the end of Captain America, just check the preview below.

Marvel isn’t the only company planning to take over the box office and break records for next year’s summer season, DC Comics is also pouring it on thick with two different super-hero franchises.  The primary looker is ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.  Staring Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, and Anne Hathaway, this is set to be the final chapter in Christopher Noland’s Batman trilogy.

One interesting thing about some of the photos being revealed, and the news on the official website is that Selina Kyle is listed as a character, but ‘Catwoman’ isn’t.  (Selina Kyle is the Catwoman’s true identity in the comics.)  So when the first photos of Anne Hathaway as Selina debuted with her jacking Bruce Wayne’s batpod, it was somewhat evident that she may not take the Catwoman persona at all, she seems to be bad-ass enough without holding a whipe, or putting on the claws.

And the final banger… One that WON’T help tip the box-office battle of 2012 in the favor of DC, (because it drops 2012) is The Man Of Steel. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have provided the first look at the new Man of Steel, revealing star Henry Cavill as Superman in the film from director Zack Snyder.  The film also stars three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent’s adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar nominee Diane Lane and Academy Award winner Kevin Costner.  Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, and Faora, Zod’s evil partner, played by Antje Traue. Also from Superman’s native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman’s mother, played by Julia Ormond, and Superman’s father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award winner Russell Crowe.  Check the Man of Steel’s first picture below.

Paranormal Activity 3.

When a farmer milks a cow for too long, they get kicked off the milking stool… When Hollywood milks a movie for too long, you come up with sh*t like, ‘Fast And Furious 6′, ‘Final Destination 5′, ‘Spy Kids 4D’, and… ‘Paranormal Activity 3′.  However, after checking out the preview I was a little impressed by what they were trying to do, and connecting the 3 movies together.  I feel like if the studio stopped NOW, the entire single-camera-horror franchise may live longer in peoples minds as a good horror trilogy, instead of just going to hell… like the souls their main characters.

DJ Storm – Gucci Gucci x Haters Mashup.

Click the pic to download.

The newest sensation out of the Bay is making some pretty huge waves in the music community.  Kreayshawn has had her track ‘Gucci Gucci’ all over the radio, and in Entourage (my favorite show ever) and even got Weezy to spit over the beat.  So with the song gathering so much speed so quickly, it’s no surprise that producers and DJ’s have been throwing out remixes.  However, none of those other remixes are from me…. So I decided to jump on the bandwagon and take a crack at it.  The result is what some people have described as “better than the original”, but I don’t wanna take it that far.  I will say however that this is one of the funnest projects I’ve worked on all year.  Check the method below, and click the picture above to download the track.

The Top 100 Movie Insults of All Time.

Insults have been around for as long as any human language, (and possibly even a bit before that.)  But classic insults in movie are especially memorable because you can hear them over and over and over, and the person getting insulted always has the exact same reaction.  Harry Hanharan meticulously put together this brilliant list of some of the best.  Check the method. (And I’m not exactly sure why I chose that photo of Charlie Sheen to represent the list… But it just seem comically appropriate.)

Long Exposure Photos of Spinning Records.

Goldfinger.

Towards the end of every shift at work, there’s a time period named “Last Call”, where I ask my assistant to go grab me as many drinks as she can carry, so we have something to sip on while we break down our equipment and prepare to leave.  There have been a few times, where as a result in the sudden boost of alcohol, things get a little blurry… including the records I spin.  However, I was unaware that there are photographers out there that capture this effect and make stunning Chromatic RPM pictures using long exposure.  I stumbled across a series of said photos yesterday, and have been trying to decide which record I’d like to buy the most.  (Photos by Paul Octavious)

DJ Storm’s Interview with Miss Arie Rose.

Everyone has heard the saying “A day late, and a dollar short”… (luckily for me, with the success of my career, I’m never a dollar short) however, I was a day late with this post.  Hours of traveling to different editing studios, deliberating with my staff on what songs to mix for the background (ending up with 26 different pro-tools sessions all with different song combinations), waiting for graphic designers to create the appropriate text, all in combination with rendering and uploading times, I missed a few deadlines.  But hey, we’re perfectionists, sue us.  But when its all said and done, my first video interview starring Miss Arie Rose deserves nothing less than the pursuit of perfection.

Arie Rose has been doing her thing for quite some time.  I came across her when we worked on an episode of “Street Files” together a year or so ago, and was enthralled with the idea of sitting down to talk to her about all that she’s accomplished, all that she’s planning, and just her day to day life.  So that’s exactly what I did.  Ben Einhorn and his incredible video crew came through to Sugar Cafe in downtown San Francisco to meet with Arie and I to capture the action.  Check the method below to see how it all went.

Don’t forget to follow Arie on twitter @MissArieRose.

Thank You For The Birthday Wishes…

Yesterday (the 26th) was my birthday, and I just wanted to make a public announcement about the appreciation I have for all the birthday wishes I received from my family, friends, and fans.  I appreciate and love every single one of you.  And the last day of my birthday week is today, and I wanted recap the week, and shout out all the folks I chilled with.  From Bar None on Friday, (where we experienced some very unfortunate technical difficulties, and I couldn’t spin, but still had tons of fun) all the way to 1015 Folsom tonight for the Metrowize open bar, the entire week has been amazing.  I dropped the new Kreayshawn – Gucci Gucci remix that’s been flying all over the web faster than that stupid video of the kitten playing the piano.  And I also released my interview with Yesenia Bustillo which hasn’t made Sports Illustrated (YET), but is still quite an interesting look into her life.  Other than that I’ve just been chillin with my closets friends, and had an amazing sushi dinner with all the ‘fixins’.  And a special thanks to Sabine Fischer, Mike Vegas, Rami R., Reggie Sylvester, Jared Lee, Ashley F., DJ Von, Yesenia Bustillo, Alba Chavez, DJ Rick Lee, the gorgeous Carlee M. (who blessed me with the photo above), and Miss Arie Rose, who’s video with me shall be dropping in just a little over an hour.  And I can’t say it enough times, but thank you for birthday wishes.

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer.

There have been quite a few epic, and captivating franchises in my lifetime.  Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, The Matrix Trilogy, The Step Up franchise (JUST KIDDING).  But the new Batman series however, is no joke.  The new trailer premiered before The Deathly Hallows Pt. 2, and had tons of people talking.  The new trailer features shots of Commissioner Gordon a bit beat up, and talking to Bruce Wayne, as well as a shot of The Dark Knight himself getting WORKED by Bane (above).  To see the new trailer, go to the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ website by clicking here.

Brand New Drake Interview.

Drake did a (pre NBA finals), interview with ‘Headkrack’ about his sophomore album set to drop soon.  In the interview he discussed the new sound of his album, the direction its going, and what his inspirations are musically.  At on point of the interview, he did give his predictions about the now concluded NBA playoffs, and although he may have been wrong about LeBron getting his ring… the interview itself is still very much worth a watch.  Check the method below.

Sherlock Holmes 2 and The Avengers.

As an avid Sherlock Holmes fan since I was a young lad, the release of the Guy Ritchie adaptation was the source of a lot of excitement. For anyone who hasn’t seen the 2009 Sherlock Holmes, the end of the movie was a blatant announcement that there would be a sequel. Of course I’ve been waiting patiently for a trailer, but I had to settle for 2 new posters released by Yahoo.

And as if the posters for “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” wasn’t enough to get my heart rate going, I also caught a glimpse of the new official Avengers poster.  It’s a hyper-realistic illustration of all the main characters, including Black Widow and Hawk-Eye.

Eminem – Space Bound (Official Video)

Eminem has been on a roll for the last year, coming back harder and stronger than most people who had fallen into his predicament.  His most recent release is the music video for “Space Bound”.  The song is about Em letting his feelings for a woman get the best of him (again.) The video features porn-star Sasha Grey, who has been breaking out in to different acting roles as her career has progressed.  Most recently she shared the screen with the stars of the hit HBO show Entourage, and in the season finale, she was even in the same episode as Eminem… (That might have been the real reason Em punched out Vinnie Chase in hotel party.) But all in all, it’s a solid video for a heartfelt song.  Check the method below.

The New Ghostbusters.

There are some truly great graphic artists out there online who turn in work that rivals those of the professionals who get paid the big bucks. Evidence such another great talent has just manifested itself over at SlashFilm in the form of some great computer animated character designs for one of my favorite films of all-time: Ghostsbusters. The man behind the work in question is Fabrizio Fioretti who merely worked on these designs in his free time on evenings and weekends. The collection reminds me so much of the ‘TMNT‘ version of the Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtles.  These are truly breathtaking and make our proton-packing heroes look like they just came straight out of Pixar Animation Studios. Here are Fabrizio Fioretti’s computer animated Ghostbusters characters.

Chris Brown’s Cousins Chase Down Frank Ocean.

I do my best not to help stimulate hip hop beef, or draw too much attention to it on the blog… BUT this one was a little too much for me to ignore.  Odd Future’s own Frank Ocean went off on Chris brown for seemingly no reason recently on twitter after Chris Brown complimented him.  What ensued was a back and forth between Brown, Tyler The Creator, and Frank Ocean that was eventually broken up by none other than The Game (random.)  But although the argument may have ended there, I’m getting the feeling things are just heating up.  More below.

Now, I have to admit, that Chris Brown doesn’t exactly strike me as the most gangsta of the child star R&B singers on the planet, however, this doesn’t mean that his family won’t go hard.  From the description of a video that surfaced recently, Frank Ocean allegedly ran after being confronted by Chris Brown.  But weather that’s true or not remains to be seen.  What the video actually shows however is Frank Ocean driving away from who are reported to be Chris Browns cousin.  TO ME, by the looks of things in the video combined with  knowing a bit of background on the Odd Future crew, I don’t think this is the end of it at all.  And who knows, if this is the next hip hop beef to spill over from word to action, Chris Brown may have the upper hand… he messed Robyn pretty bad.

Samuel L. Jackon’s Bedtime Story.

For some people, putting their children down to rest is a precious, heart warming, bonding moment they look forward to.  It can be a time when a child looks to their parent for comfort and protection, in the uncertainty of the night, or after the turmoil of a haphazard day.  For other parents however, bedtime is simply a time when they clock out of their parental job, and they just need their little to one to go the f*ck to sleep for a few hours.  Adam Mansbach’s book “Go The F*ck To Sleep” is almost a perfect blend between the two extremes of being sweet, nurturing, and totally fed up with your child.  Now for the epic twist… It’s narrated by Samuel L. Jackson himself.  Click the pic to listen. (via BuzzFeed)

If You Grew Up In The 90′s, You NEED To See This.

I’ve said many times before that I spent the majority of my growing up in the 90′s.  Video games, movies, and television shows were all the building blocks of the person I am today (just like Bob Marley had an influence on my parents).  I came across a video recently that pretty much sums up everything I knew and loved as a kid growing up in the 90′s.  And if you had access to media, you know most of it too.  Check the method.

I’m On One Docu-Video.

I’m well aware that I posted up some footage by Derick G recently documenting behind the scenes of a music video, but going through his collection of work has led me to another gem.  The documentary style footage taken of the “I’m On One” video takes an interesting peek behind the curtain of Miami life, the concept behind the music video, and the people who helped put it all together.  Check the method below.

Green Lantern Concept Art.

So a few of my boys, my assistant and I went the nerd route, and saw Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern last night.  All in all, the movie was pretty good, and the only thing more impressive than Angela Bassets ass (which made an AMAZING cameo in the movie) was the details in the suits of the Green Lantern Core.  Each suit was fashioned differently, and seemed to be based on the muscular structure of each species wearing it.  After I saw the movie, I was compelled to look up some of the concept art, and the pictures below are what I found.  (Unfortunately however, aside from the first and last picture, the rest don’t get too much bigger.)  But check the method regardless…  And if you happen to go see Green Lantern, stay after the credits.

On Set with Young Jeezy & Lil Wayne.

It seems like in the entertainment business, just as in life, some friendships never diminish.  Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne have teamed up multiple times in the past on tracks in the past, and now that Young Jeezy is back from his “absence”, they’re back at it again.  The track Ballin has been climbing up the rap radio station playlists for a few weeks now, so it’s only right that they shoot a video.  Check some of the behind the scenes footage below.

DJ Storm – White Gurls.

Click the pic to listen.

I’ve always been a fan of humorous songs, and when I started working on ‘The Mix Up‘, I really wanted work a bit more comedy into the music I was putting together.  The song “White Gurls” is funny because of both the content in it, and the subject matter itself.  Verses from Lil Wayne and Nas, mixed with samples from Jay-Z, E40, Joe Buddens, and Kanye West all blend together to create when I still think is one of the best songs on ‘The Mix Up‘.  Click the pic to take a listen.

The Muppets.

Click the pic to watch the trailer.

On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.

Eat Down The Rabbit Hole.

All ‘Alice in Wonderland’ fans can witness the magic of Fantastic Design Works Co.’s new Alice In Wonderland inspired restaurant in Tokyo. The entire story unfolds within the walls of the 2,000 sq. ft. restaurant, from beginning to end. Upon entrance, guests are graced with oversized vintage books, mirrored walls, and polished checkered floors. Making your way to your table, you will find that larger than life grass hedges encase each table. Dramatic theatrical elements are in play throughout the entire space accompanied by intense lighting, various spots of color on the ceiling, and table napkins that sit upright, threatening to march away at any given moment. Fantastic Design Works Co. designed a private dining room that’s fit for a queen! The queen of hearts and the rest of her deck is the main theme of the intimate dining space. The restaurant is an acutely literal take on the 1951 animated movie as it is divided into themed sections that reflect certain scenes from the film. If you are in the Tokyo area stop by for a bite, you never know where it could lead you.

TOKYO DRINK!!!

Its quite true when people always say art imitates life.  I just never thought I’d find a parallel as intense as this one.  Above is a clip from the hit HBO show Entourage, in which the main character, movie star Vinnie Chase is forced to do an overseas commercial for an energy drink.  In the episode, he says he’s totally opposed to the idea of it, and is reminded that the commercial will never show up on U.S. airwaves.  Below, is a set of commercials from John Travolta, at about the same age Vinnie Chase is in the TV show, and based on his moves in the commercials, I can bet he too was assured that these commercials would never see American shores.  Too bad YouTube came along.
