Rick Ross ‘Teflon Don’ Record Release Party.

This week while touring the east coast, I got an amazing opportunity to attend Rick Ross’s official record release party for ‘Teflon Don’ that dropped July 20th.  My homeboy Carlo P brought me out to New York’s infamous Club Amnesia to enjoy a VIP night of drinks, good people, and music by Funk Master Flex, and Rick Ross himself.  Click any of the pics to see more from that night courtesy of “All The Parties.com”

DJ Storm’s Top 5 Funniest Commercials

So, my boy Charlie and I had a long discussion about the top 5 commercials we crack up at every time we see them.  Some of them are recent while others have aged quite a bit.  But regardless of the date they were released, they all cater to my sense of humor in such a way that puts them in my top 5.  (Note: The names I’ve put are not the actual names of the commercials, just the way I remember them.)

5. The iPhone4 WILL MAKE YOU PREGNANT.

4. Your Man Could Smell Like He’s Black.

3. All That Language

2. Black, Black, Black, Black, Black Odor… For 16 HOURS.

1. The Greatest Commercial Ever.

On July 3rd, Tokyo 24 set up at the ‘Medicine Agency Gallery’ in downtown San Francisco, and tore it all down.  Along with Ironclad and Duckworth, the performance hailed the return of Philly P to the stage during a special performance of “Check My Denim”, and concluded with a double encore.  Pro photographer Brittany Jeffers was on the scene to snap some exclusive pics of Tokyo 24, and opening acts “Signs” and “Wanda & Wonder”.  It was an event that was not to have been missed, but if you did, just click here, or on any of the pictures to see the entire set and do it quickly.  These pictures will only be available until July 26th.

‘The Future’ Is Here.

I had the distinct pleasure earlier today to speak with NY artist G.O.V., and get a copy of his track “The Future” to share with the you, good people of the internet.  The song features a soft melodic piano, complimented by the G.O.V.’s singing, and wrapped in a blanket of warbling bass and distinctively unique drums.  I honestly haven’t been able to take it off repeat since the first listen in studio, so I have no doubt that this, along with the rest of his upcoming mixtape, will soon become a classic.  Thanks again G for the exclusive… The future is looking bright.

‘Cocktails & Condoms’ Cover Art.

Tons of people have seen the announcement banner for “Cocktails & Condoms” produced by the master photographer Unni R. and featuring the lovely Allie Marque.  But while trying to figure out the final packaging scheme for the CD, I ran into a little issue, all the photos I have are a bit too good for me to decide which one should be coupled with the front cover.  I haven’t released the front cover as of yet, but I’ve already got that one down, what I need YOU to do, is take a vote on which of the 4 photos you like the best.  The winner will be the back cover of the CD.

That New New: ‘Cocktails & Condoms’

DJ Storm Presents: 'Cocktails & Condoms'

So many people outside of my close circle of friends have been wondering exactly what I’ve been talking about when I keep mentioning ‘Cocktails & Condoms’. Well I’m finally allowed to give out some details, so here’s the skinny… ‘C&C’ is a mix CD I’m going to be releasing for the summer party season. Its a crazy blend on Electro, Hip Hop, Dancehall, and Slow Jams. (yes slow jams).

‘C&C’ features music from Gyptian, Busta Rhymes, Steve Aoki, Drake, Vybz Kartel, Tiesto, T.I., Hyper Crush, Rihanna, Tokyo 24, Fabolous, Boys Noize, Gucci Mane, LMFAO, Jay-Z, Elephant Man, N.E.R.D., Ratatat, Usher, Michael Jackson, Armand Van Helden, G.O.V., Jadakiss, Rye Rye, and like a billion others. There are some brand new original DJ Storm remixes, remixes of remixes, and mashups of originals remixed with other mashup remixes the likes of which most humans on the planet have never dared to phathom. So needless to say I’m putting 1000% of my talents into creating a project that will truly be a unquestionably impressive work of music.

Many people saw the video behind the scenes of the make up shoot, featuring video by Unni R., and showcasing the work of the production team, Allie Marque, Joana Casanova, Ashley Forrest and myself. (and if you didn’t, click here). The purpose of that video was to give people a short taste of some of the music on the CD, and give a little insight into the process behind putting this type of project out. As things progress, I’ll be dropping a few more videos of integral parts of the creation of ‘Cocktails & Condoms’ and dropping previews of some of my favorite mixes from the CD at the same time. So be on the lookout for updates and notifications from now till the release date.

Its going to be a good one.

Behind The Scenes: ‘Cocktails & Condoms’

Recently I set plans under way to shoot the cover of Cocktails & Condoms. My lead photographer Unni R. was also on hand to shoot a short video of our model getting her eye and cheek makeup done.  The footage looked amazing, and I thought it’d be a good way to get some more people interested in the music that will make up the final version of this new project.  So below is the video I edited together of the make up session.  I know everything may be a bit vague, but more details about Cocktails & Condoms will be coming VERY very soon.

Cole Rockin’ It.

B.C.

A few weeks back, I shouted out a New Jersey emcee out of my hometown of South Plainfield by the name of B.C. and posted up his track Cole Rockin’ It.  Well apparently “Cole” is still rockin it, and did his thing with his live band at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn, New York recently, opening up for the ruler, Slick Rick.  Check out the 3 part performance below.

Dat Carlo P.

Every once in a while I get the urge to collab with another artist on music, graphic design, or any other project that catches my interest.  This time I thought I’d take it out of the box a bit, and just collab with a casual friend of mine.  A few weeks ago I had my homeboy Carlo Palencia drop me a list of some of his favorite jams, from Hip Hop to House, and I would take them and mash them up.  The mix starts with some good Hip Hop from Jadakiss, and continues into tracks featuring Lil Wayne, Fabolous, Ludacris, and T-Pain.  Along a slpash of dancehall, the second half of the mix is layered with the surly bass of various house tracks, and not only showcases Carlo’s vastly broad taste in music, but displays a wide variety of music in a simple 16 minutes.  If you might be interested in shooting me a list of songs you’d like to hear mashed up club style, just hit me up, and we can work something out.  Click the pic below to download “Dat Carlo. ‘Recovery’ Review

First off, a few of the people reading this are close friends who know that I’m a die-hard Eminem fan.  That being said, I’m putting in 100% to being totally objective, and critiquing the album as an average listener.  So to answer the question most people are wondering, “is this album yet another decline from the former Shady the world became a fan of?”  From start to finish, no, Recovery is far better than his last two albums.  This is very much a departure from the crazy accents of ‘Relapse’ or absence of substance of ‘Encore’.  This is Em’s best album since ‘The Eminem Show’.  He even goes so far as to admit that his last 2 albums were sub-par, and explains why.  Although the first single off the album ‘Not Afraid’ was more about a message, and didn’t necessarily go too hard in the paint in terms of lyrical tenacity, the album as a whole is filled with classic Em-style punchlines.

“Rap is a landfill, [I'mma] drop the anvil, these are shoes that you can’t fill.  Sh*t the day that THAT happens, the world will stop spinnin, and Michael J. Fox will come to a stand still.” – ‘Cold Wind Blows’

Everyone who’s listened to more than 2 of Em’s albums is fully aware of the issues he discusses.  (His mother, his ex-wife, his children, being fed up with haters, so on and so forth.)  But to the relief of casual listeners and fanatics alike, he moves on to some new topics that puts a spin on the typical light Em is seen in.  Aside from his depression, he speaks about his jealousy of Lil Wayne and Kanye West’s success during the his hiatus, and even goes so far to admit that at the time if he would have started beef with Wayne, Em would have “gotten his ass handed to him.”  (His words, not mine).  He also gives props to Kanye in a different song on the album, and has a collab with Lil Wayne entitled “No Love”, which in MY personal opinion is not only lyrically the best song on the album, but lyrically the best song Em has put his energy into in a long time.

Some of the other collaborators on the album are quite new, (Pink, Rihanna) while some of the usual suspects are missing from the project (50 Cent, Dr. Dre, D12).  This new set of pairings with Marshall Mathers are different, yet familiar.  Actually hearing Pink on an Eminem track makes much more sense, than when you read about it online, or hearing someone talk about it.  Regardless of the new people he’s chosen to work with on this one, it still sounds like an Eminem track, unlike Em on the ‘Lean Back’ remix with Fat Joe.  Yet while the collabs may be strong, some of the choruses on songs he does by himself are a bit lax.  (‘On Fire’, ‘So Bad’).  They just make you miss the days when Slim Shady used to rap on a hook, instead of singing them all.  But I don’t believe his singing is to blame, on some songs the punchlines are so intense, and the flow is the classic Shady that all the fans love, that the choruses are dwarfed by the verses.

In terms of Em going the overly commercial road like many said he did on ‘The Re Up’, there are very few songs that have that feel, but songs like ‘W.T.P.’ have beats that are perfect for the club, but contain content from Shady like “Man, first of all I’m a boss, I just want to get that across… Man even my dentist hates when I floss.” Obviously this may not be the Eminem fans were waiting to return, but for the premise of the song it works as well as it can.  And in other songs like ‘Seduction’, he returns to the story telling style of rap that he adopted in his first 2 albums.  The song ‘Seduction’ also has the feel of the ‘Superman’ track from ‘The Eminem Show’.

The beats on ‘Recovery’ were also outsourced to a couple of new producers including Just Blaze, and DJ Khalil, and provide the project with a refreshingly new sound, but still not too far of a departure from the familiar Eminem tracks fans love.  Some of he beats (like the songs ‘No Love’ ft. Lil Wayne, and ‘Changes’) were sampled from old classic songs, and compliment the content of the track very well.  And ‘No Love’ suits both Em and Wayne’s styles of rap very well.  Although some songs are regrettably a bit similar to each other (’25 to Life’ and ‘Love The Way You Lie’ ft. Rihanna) one other noticeable difference is the absence of the classic skits that littered every other album, which to me personally isn’t a bad thing.

So, all things considered about Em’s 7th studio release, it’s a refreshing return to the Eminem fans grew to love.  Crazy lyrics, and insane punchlines remind people why they liked any white rapper in the first place.  The mood of the album is a bit somber, but it does come with many a high point for any listener to enjoy.  So even tho there is a flaw or two, don’t expect to hear another ‘Encore’.  In the track ‘Talkin 2 Myself’ Em apologizes to his fans for letting them down over the last few releases… Apology accepted.

Welcome to JamRock

Jamaica

Weather some of you may know or not, there is much civil unrest in Jamaica right now.  A few people have expressed their concern with me taking a trip to see family and to explore some business options, as a bit crazy.  But I want to say publicly that this trip was planned long before the unrest in Kingston (Jamaica’s capitol city).  And neither myself, nor anyone I’m traveling with would ever knowingly do anything to put ourselves in a pinch.  So that being said, I’ll be taking a week long break from the blog to go on this trip, and I WILL return safe and sound.  So until June 1st, success and nothing less.

DJ Storm.

Michael Jackson x Ratatat

Click the pic to download the remix.

Its not necessarily a NEW mix of any sort, but I’ve gotten a few requests to put my Michael Jackson/Ratatat remix of “Do You Remember The Time” up on the blog.  This is actually the first mix I ever thought up (long before the demise of the King Of Pop) that has been floating around the web for some time.  But I’m hoping that having it up here will help spread it to a few more people.

Re-Building DJ Storm

With every passing day, I think up a million ways to become more pronounced, or more relevant in the entertainment industry.  From managing and developing artists, to traveling, to producing successful events most DJ’s wouldn’t shake a stick at, I’m constantly coming up with new ideas that will help let the world become more familiar with “me”.  But this morning, I sat in bed, half awake, and came up with an entirely new prospective to be seen in.  So for the next few months, (until August 9th), I will be taking a bit of a break from the normal scene, to create something new.  Some fans may like it, some may not.  But when I’m done, the new “DJ Storm” will be something far more prevalent than anything I’ve done in the past.  A new website (with the same web address), a new sound, a new style, the same management (under the employ of the miraculous Mike Vegas), and a brand new tenacity for the business, will all be part of my arsenal.  So please, bear with my brief scarcity in the normally scene, and know that when it’s over, me, my music, and everything else I have my hand in, will be light-years ahead of the work I’m involved in now.

Money To Blow… On Designer Drugs.

Free Download

Its always great as a musician when your inspired by your peers, especially if they aren’t in the same field of work as you are.  Not too long ago I was at Stanford University, when a friend of mine, (Rodney Gateau) turned me on to a song named ‘Drop Down’ by the electro group Designer Drugs.  After procuring the song for myself, I began to come up with a mix in head, put it on the tables and fleshed it out.  If you manuvered your way to this blog from djstorm.com, then you have already heard some of the mix, if not all.  But here for your listening pleasure, is a remix of ‘Money To Blow’ by Baby, ft. Drake & Lil Wayne, with the beat of ‘Drop Down’ by Designer Drugs.

Electric Boogaloo

I am a firm believer in the saying practice makes perfect.  I take about 1 to 2 hours every day to mix, scratch, and cut all different types of music.  Occasionally I’ll record my sessions in an attempt to fix my mistakes, and once in a while I’ll do something off the top of my head that I’m very happy with.  This 8 minute take of a mixing session already debuted on http://www.djstorm.com a few weeks ago, but due to an overwhelming demand for a download link, I’m putting up on the blog.  So here for your enjoyment, “Electro”.

As many of you may have noticed, my posts have pretty much stopped over the last few days.  I’ve been posted in the great city of Los Angeles, with Duckworth of Tokyo 24 in South Central, enjoying the weather and getting work done.  When I leave, all the pictures from the trip will be available shortly after.

Sleepless in Las Vegas

Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas

A vacation is something that anyone in the entertainment line of work is lucky to get.  Some of us grind so hard, 20 minutes away from our cell phones is a vacation.  Then there are others who will “eventually get a day to myself… That’s gon’ be the day they burry me, but it’ll come eventually” – Lil Wayne.  I however understand the importance of staying hard at work, but I can never say no to a long weekend in Vegas.  So when my good friend Marqus Crawford offered me a deal on a villa in the Planet Hollywood towers, I obviously said yes.

Above are a few shots of the Villa we will be occupying during our stay.  While I’m alongside Jade Davis, Erik Woodruff, and Marqus, I will be giving you a play by play on the action, activities, and adventures that go down from the 1st to the 4th of April.
