The Superhero Unveiled.

Original Artwork by Danny Haas

The Skull Nickles.

The term “Hobo Nickel” describes any small-denomination coin (though, normally soft nickels) that people carve to create miniature reliefs of…well, all sorts of things. It started sometime in the 18th century but continues to this day; There’s even an entire society dedicated to the art of nickel carving…  This all sounds stimulating, I know, but have a little faith. As with all types of art, something that seems simple in explanation is made beautiful and complicated in the hands of right artists. Check out a few of these “Skull Nickels“, a very surface view of just what carvers do with these “Hobo Nickels“.

The Puma House.

In sports world, ‘doing stairs,’ is generally a treacherous endeavor that leaves one with burning calf muscles and an overabundance of lactic acid (Cough, cough… wheeze). The Puma House, in Tokyo, is looking at stairs from a whole new angle. Located in the city’s Aoyama design district, the Puma House encompasses the brand’s press room and event zone, all in one dynamic space, allowing for exhibitions, events, fittings, product launches and other media events.

Cool, grey cement is outfitted in warm wood stairs that encircle columns and serve as a repetition of pedestals, showcasing the new sneaker line. The team at Tokyo-based, Nendo, who curated the space explains, “For our design, we placed ‘staircases’ that climb around the existing features of the space like vines. The resulting effect is a strong reminder that we exercise our bodies daily, going up and down stairs, and has a visual connection with stadium stairs and podiums, to bring in PUMA’s important relationship with sports.” Talk about stepping up their game.

The Audi Ring.

French designer Arnaud Lapierre has created ‘ring’, a series of mirrored cubes placed in a circular pattern in collaboration with AUDI.  The vast amount of reflections and angles warps the perspective of the surrounding area in a way I’ve never seen before.  The optical effect creates a surreal environment in which both the structures and people are distorted and recreated, fracturing the usual relationship that individuals have with the piazza as well as themselves.  Overall, the installation measured 5500 x 4000 mm (216 x 157 inches).  The ‘ring’ installation was on show at Place Vendôme, Paris, at the 2011 Foire Internationale d’art Contemporain (FIAC).  Check the method.

The 2lmx Luxury Watch.

Designed by watchmaker and former museum director Arnaud Tellier, the ’2lmx’ is the inaugural watch of a new
Geneva-based luxury watch manufacturer by the same name.  A series of barrels move to display the hours and minutes in 24-hour format, with the device’s internal workings are partially exposed through sapphire crystal windows.  The unusual watch movement consists of 337 parts and 44 jewels, manually wound with a power reserve of approximately 120 hours.  Six rolling drums, each imprinted with the numbers from zero to nine, are activated by cams in the custom-designed vertical tourbillon mechanism.  Each watch is hand-finished and -assembled over the course of 1,000 hours in switzerland. the five 2012 models include a platinum case with black or white dial, rose gold case with black or white dial, and anthracite titanium case with black dial.

The De Bethune Dream Watch IV iPhone Case.

De Bethune has released the Dream Watch IV, an iPhone 4S case that features a mechanical clock as well as protection for your phone… and your brain.  Clearly inspired by the unique piece made for Only Watch 2011 (below), the pocket watch face is made from blued titanium with gold and diamond stars.  The Dream Watch IV also provides electromagnetic protection for the user by reducing the physiological impact of its potentially damaging waves.

The Dream Watch IV follows De Bethune’s launch of the DBM (pictured below), a crocodile cell phone case fitted with a traditional two-hand timepiece.  Limited to just 12 pieces, the Dream Watch IV will be officially unveiled at the De Bethune exhibition to be held in Geneva from January 15-20, 2012, during the SIHH.

Hamboards?

Out of all my years on this planet, I’ve never heard of a Hamboard until this afternoon.  The history of Hamboards, revolves around a family of seven surfers from Huntington Beach, California. The project took eight years to be completed, and the result, is feeling like you’re out in the water on your surfboard.  Surfers and skate boarders from around the world, order the extra-long skateboard for a fun, classic and different ride.  Hey, you learn something new everyday.

The Wonderlamp Collection.

I’m not quite sure what my recent fascination with lighting is, but I’ve been coming across some extremely unique examples of ways to light a house or apartment.  Belgian studio ‘Studio Job’ together with Dutch designer Pieke Bergmans presented their ‘wonderlamp’ collection at Italian gallery Dilmos during Milan Design Week.  Studio Job creates monumental objects made of cast bronze, while Bergmans has made a name for herself developing mouth-blown crystal forms which coagulate into fluid forms.  For ‘wonderlamp’ the light giving blubs of Bergmans are linked to seven bronze objects from Studio Job.  With the collaboration, the unique style of both designers remains intact.

The Perrelet Turbine Poker Watch.

I’m a huge watch person, and although I put ton’s of wrist pieces up on the blog,  the Perrelet Turbine Poker watch is one I know for sure I’ll have in my collection quite soon.  This is a piece which makes very clever use of the brands aeronautical-inspired 12 blade double rotor dial.  A selection of cards are hidden beneath the rotor blades which constantly revolves thus obscuring the cards which will not be revealed until the rotor stops.  Perrelet offers three dial options featuring different card hands. The case is in DLC coated stainless steel and has a rubber strap.  Movement is the Swiss automatic Perrelet caliber P-181 with double rotor, exclusive to the brand. Retail price for the time piece starts at $6,000 USD.

He has worked for clients such as Disney, Universal Studios, Penguin Books, Random House, Tor books, UpperDeck, Wizards of the Coast, and DC Comics.  Check out some of his dazzling portfolio below.

The Block Lamp.

Each part of these ingeniously designed light pieces is hand cast and undergoes an extremely long cooling process to avoid cracking later on if exposed to strong temperature changes. The matte bulb shape is sand-blasted and the electric bulb is included when you get one.  The Block Lamp has been showered with design awards including: Excellent Swedish Design in 1998, the Design Plus Award at the Ambiente Trade Fair in Frankfurt in 1999 as well as the Best New Product at the Accent Show in New York in 1999.  And probably for good reason, this thing is simple, concise, and attention grabbing design is one of a kind.

The 2012 Campari Calendar.

“It’s the end of the world, baby!” is the title of the latest edition of the iconic Campari calendar unveiled last week in Milan.  Inspired by the Mayan prediction that the world will end on 21 December 2012, the Italian drink company’s calendar features a series of photos where Milla Jovovich is portrayed in different end-of-the-world scenarios.  The powerful images were taken by internationally recognized fashion and advertising French photographer Dimitri Daniloff.

Mila, who is wearing haute couture outfits and jewelry by the Swarovski, Messika, Yann Weber, Stéphane Rolland and Paco Rabanne brands among others.  Always accompanied by a bottle or a glass of Campari, the actress shows a resolute attitude as she poses in couture clothes in a series of settings that go from desertification to hurricanes, meteorite showers and an alien invasion.  “It is our mission as an aperitif to offer Campari lovers an intense, positive moment during this time, to celebrate whatever may happen and make a toast to life,” said Campari chief executive Bob Kunze-Concewitz.  The Campari calendar made its first appearance in 2000 and has previously starred celebrities such as Benicio Del Toro, Olga Kurylenko, Salma Hayek, Eva Mendes and Jessica Alba.  Each year, the brand issues only 9,999 copies of the edition and distributes them exclusively to friends of Campari internationally.

A Look At Steve Jobs’ Unfinished Feadship Superyacht.

Steve Jobs was designing his own Feadship superyacht at the time of his death. The vessel had been in development since 2009.  The design is said to be sleek and minimalist, naturally, with 40-foot-long glass walls and was to be built at Feadship’s facility in the Netherlands.  “Sometimes, word gets out about one of our yachts,” Feadship tells Super Yacht News regarding the report.  We often build for captains of industry, royalty and other leading individuals. Understandably, our clients value their privacy greatly and consequently we never discuss our owners’ identity. We choose not to comment.”  So what would Job’s yacht look like? Feadship’s Breathe concept, first unveiled at the Monaco Boat Show last year, is probably a good indication.  Drawing inspiration from biomimicry, which imitates forms found in nature, it is one of the most radical Feadship designs to date.

Chivas Regal x Dan Funderburgh.

Chivas Regal have teamed up with New York illustrator Dan Funderburgh to launch a limited-edition gift tin for its 12-year-old expression.  The tin, which is inspired by the Chivas Regal crest, features a gold image of the lion emblem which appears on all Chivas Regal packaging.  Chivas Regal has previously partnered with high profile names such as Christian Lacroix, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood.

How To Make A Zombie.

The walking dead is one of my favorite shows on TV right now (since Entourage ended).  It’s just interesting to me to see how everyone involved can take a simple zombie movie premise and turn it into a full blown series.  For anyone who hasn’t seen it, it’s a damn good ongoing story that not just all about shooting the undead in the dome.  One of the things that never really grabbed my sense of curiosity was just how they made the zombies in the show.  But the make up designers for the show recently put up somewhat of a tutorial on how exactly they do it.  Check the method.

1. The “Walking Dead” makeup team fits actor Kevin Galbraith with a bald cap and accentuate his high cheekbones to make them look sunken.

2. Next, Galbraith is fitted with rotten-looking, custom-made dentures that can fit under a prosthesis.

3. A custom-made, foam latex prosthesis extends from Galbraith’s forehead to his neck.

4. Makeup artists Kevin Wasner (far left) and Jake Garber glue on individual body wounds. “We had to do his entire upper body. It took 45 minutes,” Nicotero says. Zombie blood is a mixture of Karo syrup, red and yellow food coloring and caramel, plus a drop of detergent so it soaks through clothing.

5. Garber next fits the greasy, sparse zombie wig to the bald cap.

6. Zombies have no time to shave so Wasner adds some stubble and some disgusting dried blood around Galbraith’s mouth. “It’s black sludge in their veins,” says Nicotero.7. The application of hand-painted white contact lenses is the final step of Galbraith’s transformation from working actor to frightening zombie. “The most inspiring part of what we’re doing is that you can have the same person sit in your chair 10 times and they won’t look like the same person when they walk out of the makeup trailer,” says Nicotero.

The Artwork Of Lori Nix.

When it comes to this particular collection of images, I don’t necessarily want to limit it’s classification to simply photos.  What Lori Nix has done is an odd but mellifluous blend of sculpture, arrangement/composition, and photography.  Check out part of her striking collection below.

A Way To A Wind Powered Future.

The simply named Road Lights is a system of wind generated lane lights powered by the wind of vehicles whizzing by. You’ve all felt it before, that wall of air as a car passes by. Why waste it? The energy captured by the system illuminates a series of pegs 50-100 meters in front of you to lead the way. Eco-friendly (yes I’m still using that phrase) and a perfect opportunity for a really creative car commercial.

The Amulet Helmet.

The Amulet Helmet by designers Kim Jungwoo & Kim Yoonsang takes influence from the Sun Ja Mun pattern, a traditional Korean symbol that you’ve probably seen before. It represents love, living, & luck. Whether it will bring you any of those things or not, there’s no denying that it’s one cool looking piece of headgear.

An H2O Inspired Gallery.

Zaha Hadid Architect and Roca recently announced the opening of the Roca London Gallery (a design inspired by the power of water as a transforming element to carve a sequence of dynamic, porous spaces for the gallery). Fissures and slices in the walls give permeability consistently throughout the gallery. The design theme of water extends to the facade, which appears as a set of ripples in movement across the exterior.  One of the sickest building designs I’ve seen yet.

The Translucent Church.

Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, a collaboration between young Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs (Leuven, 1983) and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh (Leuven, 1983), have built a see-through church in the Belgian region of Haspengouw. The church is a part of the Z-OUT project of Z33, house for contemporary art based in Hasselt, Belgium. Z-OUT is an ambitious longterm art in public space project that will be realised on different locations in the Flemish region of Limburg over the next five years.  The church is 10 meters high and is made of 100 layers and 2000 columns of steel. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the church is either perceived as a massive building or seems to dissolve (partly or entirely) in the landscape. On the other hand, looking at the landscape from within the church, the surrounding countryside is redefined by abstract lines.

The design of the church is based on the architecture of the multitude of churches in the region, but through the use of horizontal plates, the concept of the traditional church is transformed into a transparent object of art.  The project is called ‘Reading between the Lines’ and can be read as a reflection on architectural themes such as scale, ground plan etc., but the project also emphatically transcends the strictly architectural. After all, the church does not have a well-defined function and focuses on visual experience in itself (one could even consider it to be a line drawing in space)

The BKc x Tricker’s Brogue Boots.

Hand-crafted in England from the finest materials in the world, sizing and fit may be different from ordinary brogue boots or shoes.  The BKc + Tricker’s Brogue Boots are available in two colors; Black and Honey Brown.  The cost is $550 USD plus a $20 shipping fee for orders being shipped within the U.S. and a $50 shipping fee for orders being shipped internationally.  The boots have UK men’s sizes and this means the US men’s size equivalent would be half a size up.  (For example a UK 8.5 would be a US 9. So be sure to choose the correct UK size when you place your pre-order at the BKc website)

Folded Page Book Art.

Isaac G. Salazar is the artist behind these incredible book “sculptures”. He’s been creating these intricate works of art since October 2009. His books first started out simple and have recently become more complex in design.  Check the method.

A Porsche Cell Phone?

Just yesterday I was schedule to come to through to a Porsche event in the Bay Area, and although I couldn’t make it, I tried to look up some pictures of the event this morning.  I didn’t find what I was looking for, however, what I did find was that ‘Research in Motion’, in collaboration with Porsche Design just launched its latest BlackBerry smartphone Porsche Design P’9981.  The exterior is made up of a forged stainless steel frame and the rear is covered with hand-wrapped leather. It also boasts of a laser cut QWERTY keyboard.  The P’9981 comes fully functional with 8 GB of hard-drive memory, a 1.2 GHz processor, as well as Dual-Band Wi-Fi capabilities and offering 720p HD video.  The device offers a smooth browsing experience and a built-in compass, as well as the usual selection of exclusive appl on BlackBerry App World™ 3.0.  The BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 smartphone is set to hit stores later this year. Pricing information is not yet announced, but the device is anticipated to cost $2,000.  “The Porsche Design P’9981 is a truly modern luxury smartphone, where the timeless style of Porsche Design meets the unmatched mobile experience provided by BlackBerry,” Todd Wood of RIM said describing the phone.  This will be RIM’s first collaboration with a luxury brand to release a smartphone and RIM now joins other collaborations on the market today, including Samsung with Armani, LG with Prada, Asus with Lamborghini, and Acer with Ferrari.
