Leonid Tishkov’s Private Moon

01 02 03 04 05 06

If you think this is a series of unearthly photo-manipulations, then you’re wrong. Moscow-based physician Leonid Tishkov is actually traveling the world with his own personal moon. The artist created the moon 10 years ago for a contemporary art performance, after which he took it back to his apartment and eventually started traveling around the world.

“I have traveled Private Moon for ten years and each time the moon reveals more space to me. The moon is a shining point that brings people together from different countries, of different nationalities and cultures,” – says Leonid.

Inside The World’s Quietest Room

Orfield-Laboratories_2-620x410 Orfield-Laboratories_1-600x620

With what seems like a constant need to chatter away on cellphones or listen to music with earbuds, a little quiet time may be in order. We’ve got the perfect place: the Guinness Book of World Records’s quietest room. It’s so quiet the longest anyone has been able to stand it before beginning to go a bit batty was 45 minutes — to be fair, part of that challenge was to remain in the dark too.  The “anechoic chamber” at Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis is 99.9 percent sound absorbing.  The Daily Mail reports the room is made with 3.3-foot-thick fiberglass acoustic wedges with walls made of insulated steel and a foot of concrete. An anechoic chamber in Minneapolis’s Orfield Laboratory holds the Guinness world record for the world’s quietest place at -9.4 decibels. As humans can only detect sounds above 0 decibels, the chamber is virtually soundless. Because the chamber is so soundless, NASA has conducted tests on its astronauts in there to simulate what it would sound like in space. Orfield said manufacturers, like Harley Davidson and Whirlpool, have also used the chamber to test how loud their products are or to evaluate sound quality.

19-Year-Old Invents Way To Clean The Ocean Of Plastic Garbage

Ocean-Cleanup-Array-Boyan-Slat-537x405

One of the ongoing environmental disasters you may or may not be aware of is all the plastic floating in the oceans. There’s literally tons of it and, fun fact, it’s slowly poisoning us. Boyan Slat, though, a 19-year-old college student, has a fairly innovative idea to solve the problem. Essentially, he’ll use large booms and giant funnels to do the job. The device consists of an anchored network of floating booms and processing platforms that could be dispatched to garbage patches around the world. Instead of moving through the ocean, the array would span the radius of a garbage patch, acting as a giant funnel. The angle of the booms would force plastic in the direction of the platforms, where it would be separated from plankton, filtered and stored for recycling. Slat’s Ocean Cleanup Array would do a lot more than just keep organic pollutants out of your sushi. Millions of dollars in tourism could be collected and a lot of boat damage could be stopped by hauling all this plastic out of the water. Of course, this solution has to be built: Currently it’s just some clever engineering on paper and some computer models.

The Contemporary Adriana Varejão Gallery, São Paulo, Brazil

Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Sao-Paulo-001 Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Sao-Paulo-011 Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Sao-Paulo-031 Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Sao-Paulo-061

São Paulo-based interior design and architectural practice Tacoa Arquitetos have completed the Adriana Varejão Gallery project. The contemporary property is  located in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The Adriana Varejão Gallery was commissioned to shelter two works of the artist acquired by the museum and exhibited at Cartier Foundation: the sculpture Linda do Rosário and the polyptych Celacanto Provoca Maremoto. The project occupies a hillside with a small slope partially surrounded by the native forest, an area formerly used to store containers. The original topography was modified for this new use: a huge displacement of earth has cut it, creating the great horizontal plane necessary to the storage. The orientation of the project aimed to recompose the site’s original topography and inserting on it an artificial element: a regular block in reinforced concrete, partially inserted in the hillside. The building structure and interior design is composed by an irregular retaining wall that gains the space in the ground floor and receives the loads of the block, in its deepest part, trough two beams, in the middle, trough four columns integrated in the wall.

Modified Social Benches

general 01 02 03 06 07

Check out this project by a Danish artist Jeppe Hein called “Modified Social Benches”. It’s a public art installation that distorts everyone’s favorite park seating surface in a variety of crazy ways. Some of the distortions are minor, some add beneficial features to the benches, and some make the benches entirely unusable. But all of the modifications do one thing very well: they draw attention. According to the artist, the goal of the project is to encourage interaction. Interaction between the public and the benches, and interaction between the people who use the benches.

The Triennale Design Museum, Milan

Contemporary-Architectural-Design-Milan-00

Milan-based architectural practice Studio Fabio Novembre have completed the Triennale Design Museum project. Completed in 2012 the stunning building can be found in Milan, Italy. According to the architects: “Protecting the arts and sciences in our times is no mean feat, so for this fifth edition of the Triennale Design Museum it has taken plenty of human endeavour alongside the intervention of the Muses.”  In agreement with the curators, the director originally opted for an authentic mythological figure to do the interior design of the spaces for this edition, Enzo Mari, who was forced to decline due to an indisposition, leaving it up to yours truly to take on this Herculean task. It involved exhibiting something absolutely new compared to previous editions, a selection of carefully chosen items confirming the theory that there is only one Italian school of graphics, even though it has no proper structure, hardly surprising since the same could be said about everything connected with our dear old unpredictable country.
