Botanicus Interactus.

“Botanicus Interacticus” is a Disney research project that uses an electrode in the soil of a plant to turn the entire plant into a multitouch interface that can be used to control computers and other devices.

Botanicus Interacticus is a technology for designing highly expressive interactive plants, both living and artificial. The technology is driven by the rapid fusion of our computing and living spaces. Botanicus Interacticus an interaction platform that takes interaction from computing devices and places it anywhere in the physical environment. In particular we are targeting living plants.

Botanicus Interacticus has a number of unique properties. This instrumentation of plants is simple, non-invasive, and does not damage the plants. It requires only a single wire placed anywhere in the soil. The interaction with plants goes beyond simple touch and allows rich gestural interaction. Examples include: sliding fingers on the stem of the orchid, detecting touch and grasp location, tracking proximity, and estimating the amount of touch contact between user and a plant.

Botanicus Interacticus also deconstructs the electrical properties of plants and replicates them using electrical components. This allows the design of a broad variety of biologically inspired artificial plants that behave nearly the same as their biological counterparts. The same sensing technology is used with both living and artificial plants.

A broad range of applications are possible with Botanicus Interacticus technology: designing interactive responsive environments and new forms of living interaction devices as well as developing organic ambient and pervasive interfaces.

The Immersive Cocoon Display.

The world of interfaces continues to evolve and surprise us. We still think of it as something we can hold, fold and place in our bag to carry anywhere. What if you can be part of an intuitive and holistic experience where your interface is not reduced to a mouse-click or a two dimensional tablet screen. Welcome to the Immersive Cocoon, a surround display dome with sophisticated motion sensor technology that inspired  the technology depicted in ‘Minority Report’. Now your body becomes the interface, as you are enveloped and your body movement becomes part of this digital environment to make our everyday lives more enjoyable, at least that is what this conceptual project tries to explore.

The Immersive Cocoon opens its hatch silently and extends a small set of stairs that helps you move into this 360 degree display covering the entire interior walls. Inside you can sit, lean, and accommodate an adjustable work surface depending on how your imagination desires to utilize the Cocoon. You can connect into a virtual meeting across the globe, do yoga while at the airport or even visit a preserved temple in Tibet right from home, mall, or anywhere else this product will be located. I am not going to lie, I would like this in my job as I would not mind having lunch on the coast of a Greek island at least twice a week.

The Cocoon’s potential extends beyond leisure and into education, productivity, training and other uses that would benefit from this immersive technology. This spherical pod seems to show promise in many levels but the question always become its financial feasibility and social acceptance. Although innovative, something this ground breaking seems to have a hard time being implemented in public spaces. Seeing the roll out of this technology will be interesting and full of insight as more people interact with it. We can guarantee that it doesn’t lack thought and ingenuity as its 3D motion tracking system was developed by John Underkoffer, a former fellow of the MIT Media Lab. This conceptual prototype developed by NAU out of Zurich, Switzerland, shows immense opportunities into future daily and exclusive activities. What will be the price we pay financially, socially and psychologically? Maybe it will not be hard to adopt after all as we are really used to seeing this kind of innovation on the big screen.

The Ford EVOS.

The EVOS concept car introduces a new design direction for the global car manufacturer ford.  Debuting at the 2011 frankfurt motor show, the vehicle is an interpretation of a fastback bodystyle design, featuring four gull-wing doors which open to reveal a four-seat layout.  The concept offers a bold red driver’s seat and the vision of unprecedented driver interface.  The two rear seat passengers host dedicated touch-screen displays to interact with the vehicle and individually adjustable sports seats.  The concept’s technology experience embraces a new generation of driver interaction and awareness, in which the seamless connectivity between the vehicle and the driver’s ‘personal cloud’ of information is the heart of the vision for its capabilities.

With information from the cloud, the vehicle is able to provide the same connected lifestyle the driver experiences at home or the office.  The car knows the driver, automatically adapting its handling, steering and engine control to deliver a dynamic driving experience.  Drawing from a detailed understanding of the driver’s preferences and habits, the EVOS concept car combines this personal information with additional data from the could, such as the individual’s work schedule and local traffic or weather conditions. This information provides a personalized and seamless  sophistication as the driver transitions in and out of the car.

The Torch Light Glove.

The new conceptual torch light designed by Slovenian designer Tilen Sepic, is something that has been picked straight out of the sci-fi movies. The whole idea of the concept as per the designer is to produce a working light without the hassle of shadows being reflected in the object. The device is supposed to be worn like a glove around the wrist and the light is emitted through the white LED which is a part of the device. The device also includes a battery pack with the light being transferred through the attached optical fibers to a specified location. Just point at the location and you will see light.

Extreme Bagjumping?

There are certain things that I would do without hesitation, and certain things I wouldn’t… Flying in a small airplane, absolutely not, swimming with sharks… why not?  Flying when I know there will be turbulance… not willingly, flying through the air into a giant inflated bag… lets do it.  The Bag-Jump Freedrop Extreme is essentially just jumping from high heights onto a large bag also known simply as bag jumping. The video below involves a professional jumper (in this case Daniel Mosi) from BAGJUMP.com demonstrating his ability of jumping back flip stunts and diving tricks from extreme 30m heights onto a large air bag. All filmed with Gopro hero’s camera’s at Melbourne Grand Prix.  Check the method.  Looks like fun.

Digital Artworks Painted By Lonlieness.

Variations of glittered deformations form the basis for a grotesquely beautiful motif in the works of Japanese artist 非(xhxix). Digitally sketching, drawing, and painting everything using Photoshop alone, 非 visualizes loneliness in his subjects and decorates them with scars, layers of geometric abstractions and floral imagery. As most of his subjects are young men, the artist explains that “boys are more suitable to express loneliness as women are emotional and powerful.”  Concocting images of isolated pain and an ethereal sadness into haunting depictions of young western men, 非 reveals a mystified insight into the depths of the Japanese psyche.

The Square Heineken Bottle?

French industrial designer Petit Romain recently conceived of a way to take beer outside the bottle. Tired of round bottles in six-packs that clink together and are difficult to stack, Romain imagined enjoying Heineken out of a square bottle instead. Back in the early 1960s, Heineken debuted a rectangular beer bottle that doubled as a glass brick. Similar to that design, the Heineken Cube concept delivers optimal storage for manufacture, transport, and ultimately consumer use.

A Minimalist’s Wallet.

Supr Slim is designed for the person who hates schlepping around a bunch of unnecessary stuff in their pockets like one-dollar bills, coins, receipts, and year-old loyalty cards. Thanks to smarter phones and the good people at Square, carrying all that extra stuff in your wallet is a thing of the past.We believe that all you really need in your wallet are your essential cards. Supr Slim was created with this in mind – to be a super-thin, card-carrying over-achiever.

We observed that many of today’s minimal wallets fail because the material (usually leather) stretches out leaving it unable to hold a smaller number of cards. The beauty of our durable, elastic design is that Supr Slim stretches and wraps tightly around your cards. Whether you carry 10 cards one week and then 2 cards for the weekend, Supr Slim will never stretch out or lose its ability to grip your cards. At only 3 mm, Supr Slim is as thin as the cards in your pocket and you will breeze through RFID scanners.

Ethos’s Ruby Skye Commercial: Behind The Scenes.

From ‘The List‘ to a new spot at Bruno’s in San Francisco, to working on brand new shows artists from New York to Los Angeles, my plate has been filled with some interesting new opportunities.  The most recent of which was a gig hooked up by one of my best friends DJ Jeff Phantom.  The upstairs room of Ruby Skye, San Francisco’s most infamous night club got a make over, and the Ethos Tech Production team was there to create the film magic.

Special Thanks: to Jeff Pham, Thabo D’Anjou, Alexandra C., and Ashley F.  Footage provided by Steve Forbes, and additional clips by Michael Bacca.  On set crew – Aaron Collins, Paul Pascale, Spencer Moore, and Matthew Robinson.  Models – Elizabeth A. Hendrix, Kimberly Rucker, Mira Gitoff, and Rachel Kadish.  Music by Funky Notes and Asher Roth.  Editing by Storm McDonald.  Filmed at Ruby Skye San Francisco.

The Porsche Pavilion.

HENN Architects has completed the Porsche Pavilion at the Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany. The organically shaped building is sitting – in mirrored location to the Volkswagen Pavilion- at the central axis of the theme park and offers 400 m² of space for exhibitions and presentations. Its characteristic silhouette will become a distinctive icon amid the lagoon landscape of the Autostadt. Curving lines and exciting bends make the Pavilion a dynamic yet reduced sculpture with its characteristics derived from the Porsche brand image.

The structure captures the dynamic flow of driving with a seamless building skin. Its lines pick up speed and slow down just to plunge forward in large curves with ever-changing radii. A matte-finished stainless steel cladding forms the flush envelope of this vibrant structure, creating the impression of a homogeneous unity, whilst creating a continuously changing appearance depending on light and weather conditions. At the entrance the pavilion cantilevers 25m over the lagoon’s water surface in front. Below the cantilever of the large asymmetrical roof, a sheltered external space opens up. This space is visually connected to the surrounding landscape, but forms its own acoustic enclosure, providing seating for a few hundred guests. Architecture and landscape, interior and exterior as well as roof and facade are brought together by HENN in their architectural concept of a coherent, flowing continuum. The external area around the pavilion was designed by landscape architects WES and integrated into the overall concept of the theme park. This is how the new piazzetta creates a connection between the Porsche Pavilion and the adjacent Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Pavilion by means of water features and trees. By walking around the sculptural Porsche Pavilion, further highlights of the Autostadt can be discovered.
