The Intelligent Cash Register.

Intelligent Cash Registers. Duh. They remember who you are, they know your “interests.” They know you! Intel is going to unveil this prototype “register” at the National Retail Federation show in New York on Sunday, but they’re really pushing the system, not the hardware. (Although, they do mention the fact that the hardware will use 90 percent less power than modern check-outs. Nothing to scoff at.)

Intel teams with Frog Design for this project. Frog is responsible for the hardware: making this 3-touchscreen terminal work with Intel’s newest processors. The touchscreen works in concert with RFID cards and salespeople (to talk you up on more products the screen shows to be juicy.) The idea is to take the internet’s ability to “up-sell” and apply that to everyday impulse buying.

The best part, (or -only actual good part, for you hippies,) is that these machines fall back asleep when they aren’t active. This accounts for most of the 90-percent less energy spent. And as Wired mentions: “for a retail chain with 5,000 terminals, that’s a serious rebate.”

The State Of Marital Sex In 2012.

Getting married has tons of stigma’s attached to it, one of the biggest being that sex decreases by a massive amount once you’ve tied the knot.  Weather this is true or not for every married couple, the world will never know, but iVilliage did a survey that had some very interesting statistics among married couples.  Check the method.

Hopefully saying something nice will help more married men get it in.

The Kurt Geiger Stores.

UK-based shoe and accessory retailer Kurt Geiger has been rolling out its new retail store concept in the UK and around the world with the help of its long-time collaborators at Found Associates of London.  Kurt Geiger’s flagship store and headquarters at 198 Regent Street in London’s West End is a glamorous shoe emporium within a five-story historically protected building.  Red carpet covers the ramp leading to the men’s department, and it also links visually to the red glass walls at the rear of the store. The walls are lined with dark grey glass shelves forming a beautifully formal “library of shoes.”  Mirrors and glass, and the colors red, white and black create the entire visual structure of the store, allowing the shoes to remain the main focus. The Kurt Geiger Regent Street store occupies 2,800 square feet (260 square meters) of space.  The mirrors, distorting the space and creating infinite reflections, are all the props that are needed to create a luxurious, fantastical environment.  This Covent Garden store received RetailWeek’s 2011 Fashion Retail Interior of the Year award.

PLAY Comme des Garçons x Coca-Cola.

Ashley Shen created designs for a limited edition collaboration between Coca-Cola and PLAY Comme des Garçons. Presented are three designs, that package the classic Coke can in the PLAY design.  Whether or not these designs are going to become available for purchase in your local convenience store is unclear.

Get Your Contact Lenses In Tel Aviv.

Complicated is easy, minimalist is difficult. Even more difficult is minimalist design that stands out. That is why we love this little contact lens shop in Tel Aviv, Israel. It is a store concept for Adashot by EyeCare designed by Lee-Ran Shlomi Gidron of Tel Aviv-based Miss Lee Design.  It is apparently the first and only store in Israel that sells nothing but contact lenses. And that posed the main challenge of this project: How to display something as tiny and indistinguishable as contact lenses?  To start, Miss Lee created a word cloud to describe contact lenses: Cleanliness, Transparency, Clarity, Reflection, Gliding, Lightness and Tension between black &white. From that, the two main design elements emerged: The embossed-digits-wall inspired by sight tests, and the six light fixtures with concave mirrors. Minimalist, beautiful and stunning.

Music and Time On Your Wrist.

We’ve evolved from Walkman to iPod (plus whatever else there is, let’s be honest) and from wrist watch to cellphone-held-clock. Now. What would have happened if instead of the clock merging with the cellphone, the clock merged with the music device? We’ve got wrist tunes, contact.  Let’s have a short (or long) discussion here about the combination of things. As things stand, the most common place I find people hold their time is in their cellphone. On their portable phone.  Imagine that. I couldn’t have say, 15 year ago. I wouldn’t have believed you. What if things had gone differently than they have – what if instead, time stayed on your wrist, and music went there too?  This concept is called “Tick Tack Music Watch,”.  Designer A.Tnokovski plans on marketing it to “teens” and I think he’d be right.  I’m thinking as soon as phone service becomes as “free” as internet service, we go ahead and build that in to Tick Tack 2, and we’ll be in business.

The Artwork Of Gavin Brown.

If Paul Gauguin hadn’t died four years before Frida Kahlo was born, one might suspect that Gavin Brown is their lovechild. Certainly his art carries the organic lushness and slight madness of Kahlo’s many self-portraits and Gauguin’s Polynesian-period art.  You cannot blame the Melbourne-born, 47-year-old Brown for subtlety or minimalism. His world is populated by richly colored graffiti-like images of people and situations where fleshy faces and tattooed skin compete for attention with birds, fruit and flowers. The vivid richness and underlying drama contradict each other.  The color palette is happy and lovely, but these people are not happy. There is something sinister, tormented, going on. Which of course brings us back to impressionists and the most tormented of them all, Vincent van Gogh, whose self-portraits, if combined with his sunflowers would look completely comfortable with Brown’s gallery of people.  Brown has had an illustrious and multi-faceted career in fashion, film and many other forms of art and design, but his focus is on painting.  He has participated in more than 25 solo and group exhibitions. Several of his large commissions adorn the luxurious Marina Bay Sands Singapore hotel and casino.

Hanging In Orbit.

This pendant lamp from Lucie Koldova is dubbed Orbital Light for obvious formal reasons, but all I know is that it should have been in 2001: a Space Odyssey. The LED diodes that line the inside of the ribs cast a kind of omnidirectional glow on all nearby surfaces, giving the interior a very futuristic ambient light. The project was apparently designed for grand-scale interiors and halls, but maybe my kitchenette would also be appropriate.

Wale ft. Lloyd – Sabotage (Behind The Scenes).

Wale and Lloyd are no strangers to sharing the stage.  After their last large collaboration on the track ‘Lets Chill’, the duo decided to get back to work with ‘Sabotage’.  Check the behind the scenes footage of the video below.

A Swagged Out Weekend.

3 video shoots in 4 days is enough to tire any working model out, especially over St. Patrick’s day weekend when everyone is partying.  From ATNT, to Nate ‘BeatStreets’ Haden, to Jay Cee and R.O.D., Sarah Jane Swag will be popping up in all sorts of music videos and short films in the near future, all of which were shot this past weekend.  As her manager, I had the pleasure of accompanying Ms. Swag to all the shoots, and chilling with the various crews behind the scenes as she worked.  The professional photos in the set are courtesy of Geoff Taylor, and a special thanks goes out to Mark Kozen, Quincy Gohlar, and my assistant Ashley F.

Warhol’s ‘Double Elvis’ Aims For $50 Million Sale.

A painting by Pop Art king Andy Warhol depicting rock ‘n’ roll king Elvis Presley as a cowboy gunslinger is expected to fetch $30-$50 million when it goes on sale in May.  “Double Elvis,” executed in black and silvery white in 1963, “is a seminal piece from the iconic series devoted to the singer,” Sotheby’s said. The painting “epitomizes the artist’s obsessions with fame, stardom and the public image.”  “Double Elvis” will be exhibited in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and London before the auction in New York on May 9.

A Sexy ‘Superbad’ Table Reading.

If you thought Michael Cera was awkward in movies, wait till you see him at a cheap table in a bare trailer in the Valley. We’ve got this clip from the original Superbad table read. And if you don’t know already, table reads are meeting where the actors read their lines from the script as some second assistant director gives a flat reading of all of the action. This 2nd AD can’t make “porno sexy” sound appealing, the original script seems to be dirtier than what made the movie, and there’s nothing like seeing Michael Cera squirm so much it makes Emma Stone squirm for him.

Alber Elbaz Writes His First Book.

Lanvin celebrates the last 10 years of Alber Elbaz’ work with the publication of their new book, Alber Elbaz, Lanvin.  The 700-page tome is a comprehensive guide to the design and production methods required to create a fashion collection.  The first several pages will remain empty, reported the Los Angeles Times, to evoke his daily creative process. “That is how I start every day,” he divulged.

The book comes in a deluxe edition featuring a handmade cover which is “bound in silk grosgrain cloth, black foil stamping on front and spine, hand-gilded edging with engraved typography, delivered in a handmade cardboard box.  Elbaz became artistic director of French fashion house Lanvin in October 2001, achieving praise for his simple, feminine collections.

The designer’s luxury book follows a growing trend for fashion houses to “open” the doors to their design methods.  Meanwhile, in October high-end shoe label Jimmy Choo released a limited edition coffee table book charting its road to success and marking 15 years in fashion.  The book is only available to pick up in person from Lanvin’s Paris flagship at 15 et 22 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

10 Myths About The Human Body.

“Old wives’ tale”: The phrase conjures up notions of well-meaning old grandmothers boiling up plants and roots and rubbing lucky rabbits’ feet. But many of the things we believe — and tell each other — about the human body are passed on by intelligent friends, educated teachers and sometimes even doctors themselves. So arm yourself with these 10 facts, and whip them out next time your mother tries to force you into a warmer sweater.

S

10. Going out in winter with wet hair means you’re more likely to catch a cold

This old wives’ tale seem to make perfect sense, but there is actually no correlation between feeling cold and catching one. More likely, people get sick more often in cold weather because we tend to congregate indoors, passing viruses more readily. Many experiments have investigated the temperature-illness relation over the years, but it’s been found time and time again that chilled and non-chilled participants all caught the rhinovirus at the same rate. Today, some research even suggests that cold temperatures actually stimulate our immune systems, helping protect against sniffles in the future.

S

9. Reading in the dark will ruin your eyesight

While it’s true that reading in dim light makes your eyes work a little harder, there is no evidence to suggest that the practice is detrimental in the long run. Like any muscle, eyes may get tired from having to let in as much light as possible while focusing on small text, and they may dry up a little. But this eye fatigue is far from irreversible, unless you read only in the dark, all the time. But then you have other problems to worry about.

S

8. You should drink eight glasses of water a day

This myth is based on a game of telephone. Back in 1945, a government agency recommended that we need around eight glasses of fluid per day for optimal health. The eight glasses fact stuck, but what people didn’t notice was that the experts said “fluid” — which includes coffee, juice, pop etc. — and not necessarily that we need to drink it (most of our food today contains water). Also, the advice is over 65 years old. This notion has been thoroughly debunked today. So, if you feel thirsty, drink something. If you don’t, don’t.

S

7. You should never wake a sleepwalker

About 20% of the population is prone to sleepwalking, which tends to run in the family. Chances are, a lot of these people are going to hurt themselves if left to wander around dark houses in the middle of the night (not to mention those who attempt to cook, eat and drive). It’s commonly believed that waking sleepwalkers will lead to them becoming angry and disoriented, but at the more ridiculous end of the scale, some believe it increases risk of a heart attack. If you’re worried, just guide the person gently back to bed. That should do the trick.

S

6. You lose most of your body heat through your head

Time for a little logic here: If your head is uncovered but the rest of your body is, you will clearly lose more heat from up top. However, if your head is covered but an arm or leg is exposed, then that’s where heat will escape. This myth seems to have arisen from an old military study that left soldiers outside (with bodies completely covered) without hats and found significant heat loss through the head. Since then, it has been shown that we actually lose about 10% from our heads and the rest from other parts of the body. So you’ll feel a breeze whether you leave the house without pants or without a beanie.

S

5. Skipping meals helps you lose weight

Here’s the reality: No matter how good you think your self-control is, if you skip one meal, you will overeat at the next. It’s been proven. Many times. Eating regularly means your metabolism is working hard and burning calories while turning the food you’ve eaten to energy. When you’re not eating, it switches to standby mode, and fewer calories are being burned. The longer you starve yourself, the slower your metabolism will get, eventually resulting in a less efficient calorie-burning system. So skipping meals in the long run can actually make you gain weight. Also, if you’re combining meal-skipping with exercise, you will have less energy for exercise, and workouts will be less productive.

S

4. We only use 10% of our brain

Here’s the thing: We do use all of our brain, just not all at once. Brain damage studies are one of the ways the 10% myth has been disproven. No matter which part of the brain is injured, it affects performance in some way. Brain-imaging technologies show the same thing. So those who have been hoping to tap into the other 90% for telekinesis need to get off their asses and get the remote control themselves.

S

3. Cracking your knuckles will cause arthritis

If every crack of a knuckle took us one step closer to arthritis, there would be a lot more aching hands in the population. That pop you hear has nothing to do with the bones; it’s the sound of a small bubble of gas bursting, and there is no evidence to show that it will lead to arthritis, which is most often a symptom of plain old age, weight pressure or previous injury. But if you are a regular cracker, you might want to ease off. It has been shown that it does slightly weaken finger joints, leading to a less impressive grip later in life.

S

2. Alcohol kills brain cells

Your slurred speech Saturday night and the Sunday morning hangover may make you feel like you’ve dropped a hundred IQ points, but the actual fact is that drinking (unless you’re drinking pure alcohol, the disinfectant) won’t kill your brain cells. If you’re a raging alcoholic, you might be looking at some damage to how your neurons communicate, but this impairment is largely reversible. The liver problems, not so much.

S

1. Eating at night makes you fat

Let’s get this straight: A calorie is a calorie, and calories don’t watch the clock and turn into villains of the night after 6 p.m. You get fat by taking in more calories than you burn, so Krispy Kremes at night are no worse than Krispy Kremes in the morning. What does tend to happen is that people who wait to eat until late evening when they’re super hungry, or are mindlessly snacking on the sofa, consume more. If you eat a huge meal and then lie down to sleep, you may find it hard to drift off, but that’s about it.

Oh, So That’s What That Means?

With the advent of Tumbrl, people have been able post some pretty entertaining streams of information onto the web.  One of the most clever I’ve seen in quite some time is “Oh, So That’s What That Means”.  Its a simple series of pictures with text that explain what things may mean to us now a days.  Check the method.

Rihanna’s Back On The Armani’s Campaign.

Rihanna has renewed her Armani contract for another season and the singer’s latest advert for the brand has just been released.  And the singer could not look any sexier… The advert begins with Rihanna tossing and turning in a pair of bra and knickers while lying on a bed. Then she puts on a skintight jeans and jacket and goes out to catch her flight.

Rihanna has been the face of Emporio Armani Jeans and Underwear since last July. Not only has she starred in commercials, but she also appeared in print ads and on billboards.  She has even done a spot of designing for the brand, releasing just two t-shirts, two pairs of jeans and a leather biker jacket last year.

The Best Way To Diet.

Shay Aaron is a brilliant artist from Israel who makes the most astonishing miniature food jewelry. These foodstuffs look so beautiful they almost look edible.  Actually, there’s a whole market out there for miniature food. Not actual stuff you can eat, but intricately hand made designs of steaks, burgers, pies, vegetables, eggs and pretty much anything you can think of.  With portions this small, it’s one hell of a diet.

J. Cole feat. Missy Elliott – Nobody’s Perfect (Official Video).

Cole’s world got just a little hotter. On Wednesday night, J. Cole and Missy Elliott released their “Nobody’s Perfect” video, one that Cole predicted to MTV News would be his best to date.

The Mercedes-Benz Furniture Collection.

A while back I reported on a furniture collection by Aston Martin.  Since then it seems like another car company has jumped on the same train.  The new furniture collection by Mercedes-Benz Style will be making its world debut during Milan’s “design week” with a special Fuorisalone event.  The collection is made and distributed worldwide by Formitalia Luxury Group and brings the reality of research and material quality that is inherent in Mercedes automotive products into the home.  The presentation will take place from 16th April till 21st April 2012 at Mercedes-Benz Milano S.p.A., Via Daimler, 1 – 20151 Milano.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson – We Stopped Dreaming.

During an interesting conversation with my close friend and emcee A.Mo about his thoughts on human never actually making it to the moon, he told me his theory was reinforced by the fact that humans never went back to the moon.  (That’s right, a rapper and a DJ having an intellectual conversation about topics other than music.)  But I saw a documentary recently that re-sparked my interest in the matter.  Astrophysicist Neil DeGraase Tyson delves into why exactly it is that people began the space race.  The original space race was fueled by fear. What will jump start the next one (space race 2.0)?

The point here seems to be inspiration. How do we do things better? Is it through more rules and laws? Will more and better standardized testing make education better? No, I don’t think so. What will make education is that moment when people (in general) strive for better education. When people want to learn things so that they can do things. When people dream.  I can’t even think of anything else to add to this speech by Neil deGraase Tyson. It was just that good.

Drinkify!

Click the pic to see what you should be drinking.

Music and alcohol actually go together very well.  Anyone who needs proof of this should just walk right into a bar or night club.  Bars always have music, or a jukebox, and night clubs’ primary source of income is their bar.  What people sometimes may not realize is that certain types of music are best accompanied with certain types of liquor.  (Much in the same way that fine wines are paired with different cheeses and meats.)  The site “Drinkify” asks what music you’re listening to, and suggest a drink to go with it.  It seems like a bit odd of a concept, but when you try out some of their suggestions, it’s pretty on point.  I haven’t gotten too whimsical with they artist/music that I input into the system, but Eminem, Jay-Z, and Kanye West all bring up suggested drinks that are pretty on point.  Click the pic above to check it out for yourself.
