Sakurako Shimizu’s Waveform Designs.

Now its definitely not everyday that I look at something like a wedding ring, and in most cases I try my hardest to stay away from them (sorry ladies), but designer Sakurako Shimizu changed my outlook on the traditional wedding band. He has an entire collection of “waveform jewelry” that’s a miraculous departure from the norm. The first thing I noticed were the rings pictured above. Those funky little designs in the rings are Literally waveforms of the other person saying “I Do”. Now waveforms may not be as exciting to a gold digger as a huge diamond, but for a nerd like myself that works with sound everyday, it’s supremely cool. Once again, I’m not planning on something as insane as marriage anytime soon. But the concept behind the rings are crazy, they come in all different types of precious metals, and if your not looking to tie the knot anytime soon, Shimizu makes more stuff out of waveforms. Check some more of his collection out below.

A Snoop Dogg, Star Wars, Daft Punk, And David Beckham Video?

Yes, not only is this true, it’s actually pretty old.  I got into a heated debate on the phone with my working colleague Neil about Snoop Dogg, and I mentioned his participation in the Adidas/Star Wars collab.  Neil instantly called me a liar and told me I was making things up, so I decided to write this post just in case anyone else was unaware of the summer 2010 Adidas ad featuring Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Daft Punk, and a few other big entertainers.

Further than that, there was a second ad put out by Adidas featuring the same stars shortly after.  I know there are probably sneaker heads (like Gabby) cussing under their breath about how old this is, but I’m just trying to prove a point.

Automotive Photography.

I love cars.  Just to put it simply.  I grew up in a place where street racing was very common, and some people spent more time working on their cars than they spent attending the local high school.  Luxury cars, foreign cars, or exotic cars, don’t make a difference, I’m developed a solid love for automobiles of any type.  (Even thoough, I feel like the ONLY thing in the world sexier than Jessica Castillo is a fresh Aston Martin).  When I recently came across a collection of automotive photography, I was enthused to say the least.  This collection comes from all different photographers from all over the world, of all different cars, of all shapes, sizes, and styles.  I didn’t chose the photos for what cars were in them, but for the composition of the photo, the angles, focal points, lighting, style, and depth all contribute to the beauty of the car being displayed, and I didn’t want to limit what I posted just because the car in the photo was old.  So take a look both above and below and hopefully you’ll see as much beauty in these photos as I do.

Book Sculptures.

Artist Brian Dettmer challenges media that has been cast aside. Old books, cassette tapes, records and maps are the artist’s medium. With the exactitude of a neurosurgeon, he uses clamps, tweezers and Exacto knives to turn these unused and outdated objects into beautiful and intricate sculptures. Most of Dettmer’s focus is on books, favoring out of date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books and dictionaries. He begins carving away arbitrarily at the pages, letting the images reveal themselves as he moves through his process. He seals the edges of the books to ensure precision, which also transforms the splayed edges to look like a smooth and sanded piece of wood.  Carefully extracting bits and pieces, he creates a narrative within the books’ contents, revealing selected sentences and images.

The spines are bent and contorted to juxtapose different sections of the books together. No sections are removed or added, Dettmer simply works with the existing structure of each book. The pages and spines are also manipulated to create new sculptural forms. Dettmer also folds, bends, rolls and stacks multiple books to create a variety of forms.  The resulting beautiful sculptures completely reinterpret the original intention of each book. Dettmer seeks to give these forgotten objects new function and meaning. The ideas the books once put forth are reduced to symbols, with Dettmer acting as the new author, offering a new set of ideas and relationships within the covers of each volume.

The Jaguar XKR-S.

Jaguar has joined the 300 km/h club with the unveiling of its most powerful car yet, the XKR-S.  Billed as the fastest and most powerful series production vehicle ever made by the brand, the XKR-S is expected to be available to order in September this year.  Offering a 5.0 liter V8 engine, Jaguar’s latest cub has been designed around its speed qualities with a dramatically redesigned front and a separate rear spoiler.  As Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum puts it, “if you don’t like the way it looks, you probably won’t like the way it drives either.”  (Quite the bold statement).  Thanks to this modification, the XKR-S tops out at 300 km/h and can manage 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, all with a soundtrack which Jaguar describes as “motorsport-inspired aural feedback.”  It includes a refreshed interior, including 16-way adjustable heated sports seats with a memory function, designed to hold driver and passenger firmly in place during high-speed trips.  The XKR-S is one of a host of new and upgraded models being unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show, which is open to the public March 3 – 13 in Geneva, Switzerland.

My Top 30 Memories.

The 2002, December 4th Eclipse.

I was thinking recently about my future, and later on in life how I would describe world changing events of my past to my children as I experienced them.  We’ve all heard that a picture says 1,000 words, which in most cases is 100% true, so I dug up some collections of pictures and was able to comprise a set of 30 photos that exemplify some of the most important memories spanning the last decade or so.  The photos aren’t in chronological order (they’re a bit boring when arranged that way), and this isn’t every major event that’s happened since 2000, just the ones that I remember the most. Check the method below, and if you remember any of these events, let me know what you think, and your opinion of the pictures that represent them.  I’m extremely curious to hear what people have to say.

The Horodron HD-01.

Everyone now-a-days knows that I’m quite the watch enthusiast, so when my assistant showed me the HD-01 by designer Johnathan Frey, I was extremely thankful.  The watch is uses E-ink to for both form and function, allowing the bold and radical lines to make the watch beautiful and readily visible. The Horodron HD-01 is made of glossy black metal, embellished with small chrome parts. It’s a simplistic, edgy, unique time piece that anyone who’s crazy about watches should take a look at.

The Worlds Smallest Fish Tank.

Miniature specialist Anatoly Konenko, from the Siberian city of Omsk, has built the world’s smallest aquarium.  It is just 30mm wide, 24mm high and 14 mm deep – enough to hold just 10ml of water, or about two tablespoons’ worth.  The mini-aquarium is even equipped with a water purification filter to keep the water healthy for fish.  Konenko, who calls his art ‘micro-miniatures’, even made a minuscule fishing net which he used to place the fish, baby Danios.

Lil Wayne – 6 Foot 7 (Official Video)

Click the pic to watch the video.

I love to laugh, and there’s nothing better than a person with a good sense of humor.  That being said, I feel like the new ”6 Foot 7” Video from Lil Wayne demonstrates the fact that he can get a good laugh out of people.  The video (which has been delayed for quite some time to put the finishing touches on it) starts of with a seemingly random spoof of ‘Inception’ that was directed by Hype Williams, and proceeds to visualize most of the content he talks about in the bars of the song.  The images that come on screen for “Sleep”, “Death”, “Father Time”, and “Mother Nature” are extremely imaginative and very well done, and the image for the line “Young Money runnin sh*t” (above) had me literally laughing out loud.  All in all the song ’6 Foot 7′ is rivaling ‘A Milli’ in popularity, but the video for Wayne’s most recent hit is far more inventive and creative than his hit for the Carter 3.  Bottom line, the video has to be seen to be absorbed in all its splendor… Click the pic to watch the video.

Old School Japanese Graphic Design.

My close friends and I have always been amazed by the style and unique styles of different cultures, and Japanese design is no exception.  In the 1920s and 1930s, Japan embraced new forms of graphic design as waves of social change swept across the nation. This collection of 20 posters, magazine covers and advertisements offer a glimpse at some of the prevailing tendencies in a society transformed by the growth of modern industry and technology.  Although my boys and I have been inspired by the Japanese culture, its very true that the popularity of Western art and culture, and the emergence of leftist political thought played a giant role in influenced the direction of Japanese art.  Check the method below.

”The Prediction”.

So while spending a day at home, getting over a bad fever, I was looking for some oddities, or something really crazy to put up, and after a few hours of searching, I found a good one.  This little diddy is called “The Prediction”, and it’s a hands on demonstration that is essentially meant to boggle the mind the first time you see it.  The entire demonstration is presented by Richard Wiseman. I’ll let you watch it first, then I’ll give you a bit of insight…

So let me start out by saying that the first time I saw this video, the prediction was incorrect.  I didn’t have my finger on the photo that he picked, but all of the other inclinations he had were correct.  I happen to be an avid puzzle solver, so after I watched it for the first time, my mind went to work… I haven’t figured out the secret just yet, but this is what I came up with.  There has to be a reason why he systematically eliminates certain tiles, and a better reason why he picks different numbers for you to move each turn.  This obviously has something to do with the trick, but whats even more clever… is that if you freeze the video at 1:07, there’s a flash frame of the smiley face that many people miss the first time they watch it.  Now I know at the end, there’s a 50/50 chance for him to get it right, but I’m very intrigued as to weather or not the flash frame has anything to do with peoples decisions on a subliminal level.

Maelle Andre’s ”Tattoos”.

Maëlle Andre is a 22 year old photographer based in Brussels, Belgium who chooses to work with natural light only.  This method brings out a very unique quality of her work that really makes the subject matter shine.  Obviously I’m a huge fan of tattoo art (I’m pretty much covered in them) so when I saw Andre’s work, I was thrilled.  Maëlle started her photography project “Tattoos” in June of 2009 and has no ending date in sight.  Check the method below.

The Sky Garden House.

I think one of the reasons that many are skeptical about environmental design is because they think its terribly complex and costly. It does take a bit more effort on the front end, but it’s definitely not rocket science. This architecture by Guz Architects is a wonderfully developed minimalistic design with a curvilinear flare that really brings out the organic coverings. I’m most impressed with how design facilitates the needs of the plants and shrubs located throughout the house… and it would also be a bomb place to throw a party.

The Brand New Lamborghini Aventador.

Italian sports marque Lamborghini has unveiled the new flagship of its lineup at the Geneva Motor Show.  The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 will be delivered to the first customers in late summer 2011, the company confirmed March 1, describing the model as a “new reference among super sports cars.”  The model uses a carbon fiber monocoque (integrated chassis) which gives the Aventador a weight of 1,575 kg and features the same upward-opening doors used on its predecessors such as the Diablo and Murcielago.  It boasts a 6.5 liter V12 engine which can deliver 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 350 km/h.  Inside, Lamborghini has taken inspiration from airplanes and opted to display all of the instruments on a TFT-LCD screen, using a second display to show the vehicle’s multimedia and navigation system.  The car starts at €255,000 and is one of several new top-end models on show at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland — March 1 also saw the debut of the new Porsche Panamera Hybrid S, the Ferrari FF and the new Maserati 2012 GranTurismo Convertible.

Grafh ft. Waka Flocka Flame – Knock Em’ Down.

It’s been said more than a few times on this blog that Grafh is one of my personal favorites in the rap game.  When he puts his all into a track, there’s such an intense flow and multifaceted lyricism, that makes so much of his music hard to ignore.  Now on the other hand, after my interview with model Gianna DeNinno, I gained a new-found respect for Waka Flocka and his hustle, both inside and out of the music scene.  So when Grafh and Waka teamed up on the track ”Knock Em’ Down”, I was both surprised and intrigued.  The video for the song seems a bit outside of Grafh’s usual super-urban videos, and has him posted in the desert mountains somewhere.  But as the video progressed, I realized that the “middle of nowhere” scenes were most likely Nevada, because soon after Grafh and crew are stuntin all over Las Vegas for the remainder of the video.  Check the method below.
