Audemars Piguet x The Terminator

IT'Z TIME TO GETZ TO ZEE CHOPPA!

Yeah son.  It’s true.  One of the finest watch makers “Audemars Piguet”, has released a tribute watch to the Governator.  Arnold Schwarzenegger has just finished his term as Governor of California, and should work again with James Cameron.  Business Montres reports that he might also become an administrator of Audemars Piguet with whom he has a long-established friendship.  2011 marks a new step in the historic partnership between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Audemars Piguet with the Royal Oak Offshore ‘Arnold Schwarzenegger The Legacy’ Chronograph, a vibrant tribute to the actor/politician/businessman/athlete.

Inspired by the Man’s onscreen roles as well as his human values, this piece is a perfect blend of strength and control and will be the first Audemars Piguet watch to feature an all-ceramic 48-millimeter case middle and bezel.  The combination of materials, the exceptional level of finishing and the sheer sophistication of its design makes this watch a showcase of an impressive range of technical know-how.  In this case, a diamond grinding-wheel removes tiny layers of material from the ceramics in order to achieve the same level of detail as on steel.  Thus the ceramic case appears to glow in a variety of light conditions and gives off a shimmering high-tech glow.

The contrast between black and anthracite is further enhanced by the use of beadblasted titanium, chosen for the screws that punctuate the octagonal bezel, the pushpiece-guards, the two applied inserts on the left side of the case, accentuating its sporting appearance.  To add the perfect finishing touch to the range of materials, the applied numerals, as well as the hour-markers are crafted in pink gold.  The gold of the pushpieces is adorned with a non-slip gridwork motif echoing the geometrical “Tapisserie” pattern that is a signature feature of Royal Oak Offshore dials.

The mechanical movement inside features an equally exceptional level of expertise, and the hand-assembled, finely decorated self-winding movement is equipped with an ultra-efficient chronograph mechanism that measures short times where speed and power are of the essence.  Anticipated to be the last watch in the series created by Schwarzenegger and Audemars Piguet, this be issued in a 1,500-piece limited edition, each engraved on the back with the inscription Royal Oak Offshore Arnold Schwarzenegger The Legacy.

Ever Wonder What A Snowflake Looks Like?

If you’ve ever wondered what snowflakes truly look like, spend a few moments with these images from the Electron Microscopy Unit of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland.  At the EMU, where other areas of focus include crop pathogens and livestock diseases, “studying the structure of snow is vital to several areas of science as well as to activities that affect our daily lives.”  That’s no doubt true. But for the rest of us, snow’s structure is just beautiful. Enjoy.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, Come Save My Life.

You can easily mistake the Rapunzel for a canister, instead its an easy-to-use safety-descending device. Designed by SADI student Sin Sun Ho, this safety line can be used in highrise buildings. You more or less have to glide down the side of a wall (Batman style), holding onto its secure wrist capsule design.

The Transforming Apartment.

The term, Domestic Transformer would probably bring thoughts of some very freaky things that happen in the Tenderloin area of downtown San Francisco, but this is very far from the case.  Apartments are small and expensive in Hong Kong, so architect Gary Chang designed his 344 square foot unit to change into 24 different designs, just by sliding walls and panels around. He calls it a “Domestic Transformer.”  Check the method below.

The Strongest Kick Bruce Lee Ever Delivered.

I’m an avid Bruce Lee fan, and one night long ago, my best friend and I were watching ‘Enter The Dragon’, and a scene came about towards the end when Lee kicks the dog-s*ht out of his final opponent.  (My apologies for using that terminology, but there’s really no other way to describe it.)  Fast forward to tonight, while my buddies and I were working, a conversation spawned about brutality in movies, and while attempting to bring up the original ‘Enter The Dragon’ scene containing Bruce’s fatal kick, we stumbled upon this, and haven’t stopped laughing since.

Louis Vuitton for Babies?

Louis Vuitton and Yana Peel hosted an “Art for Baby” opening reception on 18th January 2011 at Espace Louis Vuitton Hong Kong.  The “Art for Baby” exhibition brought together in celebration of the Asia launch of the highly-acclaimed book by the same name.  It showcases the 20th century’s most prolific painters from America, Europe and Asia, with works by Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Julian Ope and Takashi Murakami.  Chosen from among works by Kasmir Malevich, Paul Morrison, Bridget Riley and David Shrigley, each of whom is also featured in the Art for Baby book.  The book Art for Baby was conceived by Yana Peel on the basis of scientific evidence that when babies are first born, they can see colour but have not yet developed the ability to distinguish similar tones.  As a result, bold graphics along with monochromatic black and white contrasts provide them with the tools to nurture their visual skills, while at the same time introduce them to the world of art.  The Art for Baby exhibition opens on 19 January and continues until April 2011, with all book sales going to Outset Contemporary Art Fund.

The Ear Peace Records Store.

A few days ago, I was fortunate enough to be taken on a tour of the future Ear-Peace Records store in Berkley, California.  My colleague and good friend Stu Lacero is in the process of opening up what will undoubtedly be one of the shining gems among the local businesses in Berkley.  The store features a massive graffiti mural, a floating stage, and  spaces for artists to come in and work on pieces live.  One of the first things Stu showed me was the space on the floating stage for the DJ booth.  (So rest assured I will be eating, sleeping and working in the store quite a bit), and the layout for the records, clothes, and merchandise he plans to sell.  I’ve been excited for a while now to see what the store will look like when it’s finished, but after seeing the work in progress, I know the final product will be incredible.

Team ISO.

Being from Jersey, I have a bad habit of being stuck in my ways, be it the way I speak, the music I’m a fan of, or the clothes I wear. But when I became familiar with a clothing company by the name of Team ISO, I knew it didn’t matter where your from or what you rep, their brand is bent to be a classic. Team ISO is a street wear clothing brand aimed at any individual who feels they are standing up in a room full of people sitting down. ISO is short for ISOlated and an acronym for I Stand Out. ISO is all about fitting in where you stand out. Let that inner individual shine, ISO’s goal is to help you feel different and ISOlated. New fashion at its future peak. Check the method below, a new batch of Team ISO clothing will be available soon at http://teamiso.bigcartel.com

Ricky Gervais vs. Noah’s Ark.

The other day after my little incident in Emeryville with the police, I came home only to to be engaged in an annoying conversation with a disgruntled female, and afterwards the only thing I could think to bring my irritated mood, was a bit of stand up.  When I say I watch stand up, I literally mean I’ll watch no less than 5 or 6 specials from 3 or 4 comedians for 6 or 7 hours while I work at home.  One of the best acts I watched that day was a little piece from British comedian Ricky Gervais about Noah’s Ark.  Gervais has an uncanny ability to take a simple story, and point out facts that seem like they should be obvious in a way you never really thought about before.  The section of his most recent stand up (Out Of England 2) thats named “The Book Of Noah” had me cracking up the entire time.  I wasn’t able to find the entire 17 minute piece, but the video below is a good chunk of Ricki Gervais’ best.  Check the method below.

Rosary Boys

Click the pic to whiteness greatness.

I haven’t really gotten into jewlery too much on this Blog, but after seeing RB, that might all change. Rosary Boys is a collection of jewelry designed with the efforts of unification. Every piece comes with a positive message, phrase, or word. It’s also “Compilation Jewelry”. Every month Rosary Boys works with an artist, store or apparel company in collaborative efforts to create a jewelry piece with a once in a lifetime feel. Check in to their website every month to see new collaborations. NOT A NAME BRAND, JUST A VISION. And allow me to correct my previous statement… If all jewelry was as unique as Rosary Boys, I’d feature jewelry a lot more often.

3 Excellent Particle Flow Animations.

Particle Animation.

The purrty picture above isn’t something out of the MOMA in San Francisco, it’s whats called a Particle Flow Animation.  Having been an animation major before studying sound engineering, I know how hard ‘tiny particles’ are to pull off properly while animating.  Be it Maya, After Effects, 3D Studio Max, or whatever, it’s a b*tch.  Working with veterans in the visual effects game such as Adam Patton has given me a further appreciation of how hard it is to pull off something that is visually stunning but still appears simple.  In this collection, you’ll find 15 excellent particle flow animations. They vary in length and subject but all of them are breathtaking once you can appreciate the time and effort it took to create these pieces.  It’s amazing what particle flow is capable of doing now-a-days. Check the method below to see these usages of particle flow, and just try to fathom the complexity it took to produce these demonstrations.

Lupe Fiasco Talks ‘Lasers’

Check out this recent interview with Lupe Fiasco, discussing his new album “Lasers” with ONE News out of New Zealand.

Jump City Seattle.

I know I’ve already said that I’m a huge fan of parkour, (the watching it part, not the actual jumping off of buildings part), and just like in one of my previous posts on the topic, I found a place where other could find excellent examples of the art.  Oddly enough though, this isn’t some fan-run website, or any Parkour addict’s blog.  It’s G4′s new show Jump City: Seattle.  Now I’m not exactly sure of the premise of the show, but all I can infer so far is that there will lots of awesome free running displays, and that the show will probably do for parkour what ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ did for urban dance.  Check the method below.

Ice Age: Continental Drift.

Many many moons ago, (about 4 years) I went to the movies with a close friend of mine, the photographer Audrey Amelie to see Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, and I had an amazing time.  Ever since then I have a really positive association with anything Ice Age, and since the first time I saw the new short called “Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up”, I’m pretty sure I’ve watched it no less than 65 times.  The short is almost like a DVD bonus movies that you get now a days, and features Scrat doing what he does best, freaking out, and chasing a single acorn.  For those of you who have never seen any of the Ice Age movies, Scrat (pictured above) is a character who’s story line in the movies is totally separate from anything else going on in the movie, but as the movie progresses, his story always aligns with the main story arc.  So it’s interesting that he was given his own moment in the spotlight, and although it’s relatively short, it’s still quite enjoyable.  (And one of the few family friendly things on this blog.)  Click the picture to watch the movie.

Grafh – On It Like That

Click The Pic To Listen

I’ve said publicly quite a few times that I’ve been a huge Grafh fan for quite some time, and it’s my personal oppinion that he’s for sure one of the most under-rated forces in the game as of right now.  On his new track ‘On It Like That’ he proves that he’s still a lyrical force to be reckoned with.  The track starts out with a quick shout out to Kay Slay, over a very classic hip-hop sounding beat, and proceeds into a relatively simple chorus.  Regardless of the quality of the chorus, Grafh comes hard in one solid verse that you have to listen to more than once to absorb all the punchlines, and hear the funny adlibs.  All in all, the flow is intense (as usual) the punchlines are clever, and all the qualities of the track make the replay value of the song immense.  Click the pic to hear “On It Like That”.

Hannibal Barca Bey (Hannibal of Carthage)

Last week, Duckworth of Tokyo 24, his photographer, and myself sat down in my living room, and had a very intellectual conversation about the merrits of Black History Month, and its relation to African Americans, and Africans.  Long story short, the conversation boiled down to us discovering one of the most bad-ass dark-skinned warriors of all time.  Hannibal of Carthage would legit make Leonidas piss in his red banana-hammock.   Check the video series below about this epic warrior who was credited as the father of advanced military strategy.  And if your a youth who’s still in school, when Black History Month rolls around, tell your teachers you want to learn about Hannibal Barca Bey.

Valentines Day Is Right Around The Corner.

It’s been the source of much rumor and speculation around my community of colleagues as to what my plans for Valentines Day are, and all I can say is that its none of your business. lol.  But if you’re looking to whisk a loved one away this Valentine’s Day, several luxury hotels are offering special deals to tempt you.  Moevenpick is offering a full-on month of romance at all of its Middle East and Asian properties between February 1-28, which includes 50% off a second night, a romantic welcome gift and an in-room breakfast for two.  Luxury chain Four Seasons has turned the US city of Chicago into a romance hotspot, offering a free night for couples who splash out for a bottle of Dom Pérignon on February 14 at the Four Seasons Chicago and a ‘Sweetheart Special’ weekend menu at the deca Restaurant at The Ritz-Carlton Chicago, a Four Seasons Hotel.

Its Las Vegas property is even offering a “Romance Concierge”, on hand to arrange romantic experiences such as a private dessert lesson with the hotel’s pastry chef, a picnic under the stars on the floor of the Grand Canyon and a private shopping experience at the Graff Diamonds store in Las Vegas.  Affinia Hotels in New York, Chicago and Washington are offering a Kiss & Tell Getaway, which includes a room upgrade (where available) and a turndown with sweets, rose petals and champagne from  $194 (€145) per night in New York City, $134 (€100) in Chicago and $204 (€152) in Washington, D.C.  In London, Swissotel‘s The Howard is offering a Valentine’s Day Tea special from £35 (€42), although staying in the luxury W London Leicester Square on February 14, its opening night, could be an equally good treat.

Big-spending  romantics may also want to check in to the InterContinental Hong Kong‘s HK$1 million Valentine’s Date, although it’s not for the faint-hearted.  The night, available February 11-14, includes a stay in Hong Kong’s largest Presidential Suite, chauffeured airport transfers in a Phantom VI Rolls-Royce (with a bottle of champagne en route), 1000 roses, a HK$150,000 shopping spree with a personal shopper, a custom-made menu from one of the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurants, a live string quartet in your suite, a champagne and caviar breakfast and — in case that wasn’t enough — a Valentine message displayed by banner via private boat, which can be seen from the suite’s terrace.  No matter what your budget is, or what your plans are, just spend your Valentines Day knowing that there is always SOMEONE out there that loves you.

Y – The Last Man.

I don’t normally do too many review on graphic novels, but recently I read the book “Y”, and I was floored.  I love the concept, clever approach to story telling, and the speed at which character on paper effectively develop into people you care about in the story.  ”Y: THE LAST MAN”, winner of three Eisner Awards and one of the most critically acclaimed, best-selling comic books series of the last decade, is that rare example of a page-turner that is at once humorous, socially relevant and endlessly surprising.  Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, On July 17, 2002, something (referred to as a plague) simultaneously kills every living mammal possessing a Y chromosome — including embryos, fertilized eggs, and even sperm. The only exceptions appear to be New York residents Yorick Brown, a young amateur escape artist, and his male Capuchin monkey, Ampersand.  Society is plunged into chaos as infrastructures collapse, and the surviving women everywhere try to cope with the loss of the men, their survivor guilt, and the knowledge that – barring a rapid, major scientific breakthrough or other extraordinary happening – humanity is doomed to extinction.  Yorick must travel across country to find his lost love, and find out why he appears to be the last man on earth.

2 Custom Instruments, Everyone Should Learn To Play.

Reactable

Not too many people are actually familiar with the technical definition of an instrument.  Before you say that I’m wrong, just know that 80% of the people I’ve spoken to about the ‘Reactable’ think it’s some sort of Liberty Science Center exhibit, not a music instrument.  The Reactable is a round translucent table, used in a darkened room, and appears as a backlit display. By placing blocks called tangibles on the table, and interfacing with the visual display via the tangibles or fingertips, a virtual modular synthesizer is operated, creating music or sound effects.  The Reactable is an electronic musical instrument with a tabletop Tangible User Interface that has been developed within the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain by Sergi Jordà, Marcos Alonso, Martin Kaltenbrunner and Günter Geiger.

The Samchillian

This oddly named instrument is an electronic musical tool which takes Leon Gruenbaum’s “Samchillian” concept and defines a possible product design for it. The challenge for the production team was to make a product, which would be aesthetic, ergonomic and could be used on stage. Since this is a new and an unusual type of musical instrument a lot of thought went into defining an new iconic shape but one which still comunicates as a musical instrument.  Like the Reactable, its a new type of musical instrument which uses the concept of keys representing relative notes, rather then fixed notes (as in a piano). an explanation of what that means is apparent in the film.

The Dark Knight Rises: Villains.

'Batman 3' Will be titled 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Anne Hathaway has been cast as Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle, in “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.  Hathaway, who is also hosting the Oscars this year, might seem a little cutesy for the traditionally sexy role, which has been played by bombshells Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry in the past.  But better Hathaway than other actresses in consideration for the role, such as Keira Knightley (not right at all) and Jessica Biel (even worse).  The real question, of course, is how will Hathaway match up to her predecessors.  I can’t wait to see some pictures of the costume.

Bane going to be played by Tom Hardy in “The Dark Knight Rises,” contrary to persistent rumors.  Hardy, who was Christopher Nolan’s first new hire for his last Batman movie’s cast, is on board for Bane and to say that I’m pumped about this casting is nothing short of an understatement, if you’ll forgive the pun.  For those of you who aren’t terribly familiar with Bane, Bane is an escaped convict from an island prison in South America and a supervillain. Bane has abnormal strength as a result of having had experiments with a derivative of the drug Venom performed on him.

Bent Objects.

Burning The Candle At Both Ends.

When it comes to photography, I can always appreciate  concept, design, composition, lighting, or any other aspect that makes a good picture a good picture, but when it comes to just plain being clever, Bent Objects takes the cake.  Its so funny that some simple wires can drastically change the context of everything in the picture.  Check the extremely inventive and quite hilarious photos from Bent Objects.

Swizz Beatz Aston Martin Commercial Pt.1

Aston Martin’s have been my desired mode of transportation since I was a wee lad, but something Aston has fairly recently thrown into their mix of vehicles is a four door.  One of their most stunning campaign ads to date features none other than Swizzy himself in what seems to be a quite nefarious role.  Check the ad below and lemmie know what you think about the concept.

Look-A-Like Guns Are A Pain In My A$$

Emeryville police have detained two men who boarded a public shuttle bus with real-looking handgun replicas yesterday afternoon, a police spokesman said.  The incident began at 3:43 p.m. when the Emeryville Police Department received a report of someone brandishing a gun at 40th and Watts streets, department spokesman Brian Head said. The suspect then boarded the free Emery Go Round shuttle.  A minute later, police spotted the bus and pulled it over at the corner of Hollis and 40th streets.  Seven police cars arrived on the scene, and officers pointed their guns at the bus as the roughly one dozen passengers exited one by one, walking backwards to the curb with their hands up.  Police conducted a pat search of each passenger and found that two men were concealing replica guns — one in a jacket and one in a backpack.  The guns looked “absolutely real,” Head said. “They’re pellet guns, but they’re made to look like actual working firearms that are brand-name.”  Head had no information about the relationship between the two men or what may have prompted the incident.  No arrests have been made. Head said police plan to speak to the victim who made the initial call in order to gather more information.

So in a recent post, I said that I had a pretty sh*tty day on the 18th, and if anyone spoke with me personally after 4:50 yesterday the 18th of January, I probably wasn’t in the best of moods.  On my way to finish one of my professional evaluations on campus, and the bus had stopped at a green light, and I was a bit perplexed.  I was sitting in the rear of the bus, with my back facing the curb, when I noticed 2 cop cars behind the bus, police behind their opened doors, and their guns drawn.  What ensued was one of the most hazardous and by far the most annoying afternoon of my life.

So rewind about 5 minutes, and I was in the rear of a bus in Emeryville that was being stopped as the police, sitting between four 18 year olds that were deliberating on who would take the wrap for toting a BB gun painted as a real pistol around 40th in Oakland.  Once they figured out that no one amongst them was willing to take the fall for what sounded like one person’s mistake, the entire bus looked around and realized that the cops were surrounding us, from all angles, (some were even hidden in the bushes).  For WHATEVER reason, the 4 who instigated the entire incident, still thought something was funny, and let out a few loud laughs as cops were closing in.  They threw whatever it was they had into a backpack, and were kicking it around between each other until the police forcefully let us know what it was they wanted.

A good samaritan came from the very rear of the bus, and decided to be the better person and give the police what the ‘suspects’ wouldn’t.  (Either that, or 17 cops with guns pointed at him, because he was nearest to the back window, made him want to just end the entire stand off.)   He had all weapons pointed towards him, and was instructed to put his hands up and walk towards the cops backwards.

At that point I thought the cops had what the wanted, and would let us get on our, but soon afterwards, everyone was instructed to do the exact same.  Every single passenger had to walk out, hands up with guns pointed at them, was searched, and handcuffed on the sidewalk.  An hour and 15 minutes later, there was a happy crowd of onlookers across the street that had grown tired of waiting for something exciting to happen, and traffic had resumed on the opposite side of the street.

At the end of day, everyone on the bus was annoyed, frustrated, embarrassed, sick of the cops, but no one was hurt.  The whole ordeal was more of a pain in the ass than anything thing, especially because I personally was over an hour late for my professional evaluation… which wasn’t very professional.  But I’m hoping that after my professor reads this post, I’ll get those extra 30 points tacked back onto my final grade.

Baracka Flacka Flame.

So it’s been a long day, and I’ve been through quite a bit in the last 24 hours, but my boy Jeff just helped put a smile back on my face.  He came in from New York, to my place to chill, and shared the beauty of “Baracka Flacka Flame”.  I haven’t laughed this hard in days, and everyone else at the house is in stitches.  The video features a very real looking “Baracka” parading around to one of the more popular Wacka Flacka Flame songs, with original lyrics looking far more fearsome than he already does to white people in the south.  Rumor has it, the video already made it to CNN.  Check the method below, and tell me you didn’t at least once.

Roman’s Revenge 2.0

Click the pic to listen.

Its nothing new that Roman’s Revenge set off the beef between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim, and the song has had sever reboots, like the version with Busta Rhymes, or any other freestyle track you can find on the web with the same beat.  The only disapointing thing about all of these versions is that Nicki’s verses never change.  At first I just thought it was because she didn’t have the time to re-record a new verse, but after hearing the new ‘Roman’s Revenge’ ft. Lil Wayne, I’m getting the feeling she wants the words in her verses to hammer home with her target every time the song gets another boost in popularity.  Once again her verses are the same in “2.0″, but the chorus is slightly different, and she’s a bit toned down, the 2.0 version is also shorter than the original.  I was thoroughly impressed with Weezy’s verse though, and it sounds so natural that you kind of wish he was on the original with Nicki and Eminem.  But click the pic to listen to the re(re)mix of Roman’s Revenge.
